Puppet minnows
« on: Oct 10, 2012, 03:13 AM »
I saw on a site they were selling puppet minnows and am wondering if they worth getting.  I've never used them and would like advice for if they are worth getting, what fish you target with them, and any techniques you use if other than normal jigging.  Thanks for all the help.

Just like most lures some times they work some times they don't, much like jigging rapala.

I have a jigging rapala and a puppet minnow, I fished them for chain pickerel, rainbow trout and brown trout and haven't caught a fish on them.
I do not have an underwater camera, so it may have attracted them but not tricked them into taking. I like the Jigging Rap better because I have found the hooks are stronger on them than the puppet minnow. (bend easily)
Please Consider Catch and Release

From what you guys are saying I'll hold off on getting them and get more of the lures I know work.  Thank you.

I have used Puppet minnows and had good luck with them. I used the two smallest sizes in green and a natural siver and black. I put a drop of super glue on each side and sprinkled glow powder in the wet glue until it wouldn't hold any more. I was catching white bass in 40' of water and I have also caught suspended crappies using the small green Puppet minnow. I stair step jig it up a couple of feet, then tight line it back down and hold it still for a five count then repeat. The white bass almost always hit it on the hold. My guess is it is still slowly swimming from the descent as I hold the rod still.

I have a few of the puppets and have not caught a fish on them yet, I catch lots of walleye on jigging raps though.

I have two raps and was disappointed with the outer plastic "skin". Its starting to crack. If it cracks too much more I am afraid the tail will beak off.

I haven't caught anything on the ice, but I did catch some crappie with them this summer. They were slamming it almost as soon as I dropped it in the water next to my boat. I was slow trolling.
