If you're looking for a clear with that will hold up to water, I would go with Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane Varnish.  It will probably be the most weather resistant system without going into catalyzed polyurethanes.  The Helmsman is a oil based product so it will give you that nice amber look as it ages.

I used Minwax's polyurathane on mine and gave them four coats each and they came out looking great.  The last time I did them I used the same stuff and it held up very well since 1996, just have to redo them every couple of years.  The more coats you put on the longer it will last.  If you want to you can also use Marine polyurathane they use on picnic tables.  If you want to show off the grain you could always put on a coat or two of stain before you use the polyurathane.

I second this.
