Artificials for tip-ups
« on: Oct 31, 2012, 10:10 AM »
There is a lake near me that has a no live bait policy, an is loaded with GIANTpike and decent walleye.  I figured I can use various jigging methods for the walleye, but I am still at a loss for the pike.

I imagine that I would be able to manage a few pike while jigging, but I was wondering if anyone has ever used artificial lures on tip-ups. Normally, I would have thought of this as a silly question, but I have seen a few YouTube videos of guys fishing cut bait and dead minnows on tip-ups for trophy sizes pike..?

I just figured I would bring this topic up to the iceshanty faithful and see what they could come up with.

Thanks everybody,

think you could get some unscented bait (like storm baits)and hook them up to a windlass tip up to jig  the lure,i think you can set the tip up to jig lightly or more aggressive whatever gave you the best natural looking action

We use frozen smelt or hot dogs around here.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

When they say Live Bait are they saying alive....as in they are worried about invasive species in the lake. Can you use Dead bait?
Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level and then beat you on experience

If you can use dead bait, then that is definitely the way to go for pike.  And I have had good success with those windlass tip ups.  Although they are made a bit on the cheap side, the wind really does help trigger a few more bites.  At least that is what I have found so far.

I don't know what your regulations for perch and gills are but if you catch some small ones you can use that as bait i believe

Can you use Dead bait?

This was my first thought.  Big dead sucker or smelt right off the bottom would likely be productive.
