Tip-ups
« on: Nov 19, 2012, 12:54 AM »
When i tipup fish for walleye and bass i put about 5ft of 6lb test line on after the braided nylon. I tried pike fishing a few times last year. The 1st couple times out i tied a steel leader on the end of the 6lb mono and had 2 break offs. So i figured id tied the leader right onto the nylon. I didnt have any problems that way but i did have far fewer flags. Im just looking for some advice on this. How do u guys pike fish? Leaders? directly to the nylon? Thanks, Fedder

I tie directly to nylon no problems with break-offs with fresh string.

do you have more than one tip-up ?
try a heavier mon on one for pike, say 8 or 10.
also - how long is the steel leader; are the pike swallowing the bait and leader ?

Leader tied right to the dacron line, no problem getting pike to bite.

I have a couple rigged with  5' of 20# flourocarbon leader and a couple with 6" of 15#tyger wire leader tied to 4' of 14# leader attached to the tipup line with a swivel.  I use circle hooks on all four, to get a hookset in the corner of the mouth.
So far, I get more flags without the wire leader, but I have to retie about every 3rd fish because even with the right hookset, the line still gets abraided by gillflaps or teeth anyway.

Best tip I have.  I used to use toothy critter to make my own leaders.  Very expensive!  about $24-$30 for ten feet.  Google "beading wire".  Try to find a 49 strand.  I swear it is the same stuff.  been using it for a few years now with no problems or lost fish.  best part is it comes in many different colors, and you can get a 100' spool of it for around $20.00. The brand I use is flex-rite.

I use 20lb 100% fluorocarbon by Berkley.  I've never broke off a pike.  36" is my biggest so far.  I get just as many flags as the light line guys.

I've never had a problem running 30# with a steel leader. Run Cajun Red Line, not that I think it makes a difference.

Three to four feet of 15# mono between the braided main line and a six inch 12# InvisiLeader, is what we use for pike and lake trout.  Never had one cut off....yet.

You can try craft stores. The website I purchase mine from is called bead realm. There are a number of different pound tests you can get. 18-24 pound test is tiable. Anything larger I crimp. Type beading wire int your favorite search engine.

Found a possible local supplier who i will contact next week.Is the 24# test strong enough to handle a 40" or bigger Pike without being bitten off.Several of the locations i fish can/will produce a fair number of Sumo Pike
