One Man Shack
« on: Oct 18, 2012, 09:08 AM »
Hey Guys,

I have decided I'd like to purchase a one man shack for this winter. I have a pop up shack for when I bring someone else out but I fish a decent amount of the time by myself so a one man shack would be nice! I was doing some research and I was mainly looking at the size of the shacks when they're folded up. As I drive a car I was hoping to find one that would fit inside. I was really eyeing up the Jason Mitchell Pro Thermal shack because of it's large fishable area, comfortable seat, and thermal material but it appears to be between 22"-24" tall when folded up and I don't think that will work in my trunk. So I was looking for a few tips from the experienced field here about what shacks they have had good experience with and if anyone has had to transport these in cars as well.

Your going to have a hard time getting any flip over into a car trunk, unless its a hatch back. You'll also need folding rear seats.
If you can get it to fit then it just comes down to budget and preference.
Alot of guys like the low end models because they are cheaper, lighter, and easily modded to your liking. Your not paying for features your just going to pull out.

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

I agree. I have a 1 man flip over that was bare bones when I got it for $125  I added a swivel boat seat some lights and rod storage and I fish like a king.  I dont think you will find one to fit in your trunk though.  You might want to look at the hub style for you space limitations unless you own a 76 caprice ;D

I have a hub that I really like to use but when I'm by myself I don't use it - I just run and gun outside. But it'd be nice to have a one man shack for some of those situations. My back seats do fold down so that helps with length. Right now, I put a big sled and auger in the trunk with the seats folded down so I was hoping I could find a shack to take the place of that sled.

Yah would be tough.
I think the smallest flip over available is the Shappell FX100.. 32in wide x 44in long. 37 lbs

I can get my 1 man clam Dave Genz flip over in my backseat. But it's a very tight squeeze in & out . Unless I get a truck soon .... I think I'm going to regret getting it

Cool idea, but got terrible reviews

Cheapest flip over i saw on their site was the Shappell FX100

I have a frabill recon dlx. Its pretty nice. Not a lot of room but its pretty light and sturdy. It fits in almost any car, but not the trunk. Have to put it in the back seat. Price wasnt too bad, I think I payed $150 on sale at gander mtn. $199.99 regular.

I have a shappell rover 1.0. It will fit in the backseat of most cars. Not sure about the trunk. If so itd be really tight. The new version of the rover 1 is the fx100. Its a little wider of a tent than the rover but I believe it uses the same sled. Might give them a look. I love my rover. Small and lightweight.

I have the one-man PAK-SHACK and it's super easy to use, light weight, and will easily fit in your trunk.  If you want more room, get the two-man version.  One trick......put an ice anchor thru the hole in the bottom leg(s) of the chair if it's windy....or be prepared to chase yur rig across the ice!!

Instead of spending all the extra money on a thermal model,  just get a roll of reflectix and do a mod for less than 1/2 of the extra cost of the thermal.
