Auger Mod - Momentary Kill Switch
« on: Nov 21, 2013, 03:58 PM »
Made a simple modification to my auger today.  I installed a Momentary Kill Switch.

I know I'm not the only one in the world that has tried to get their auger started, cussed it, then realized, the little switch was in the "off" position.  I figured it would probably save some wear and tear on the recoil assembly and a few "stupid" moments on the ice.

Momentary kill is good, but I would like a switch like used on PWC's, that kills when pin is pulled or maybe even a switch on the handles that has to remain pushed to keep it running, mine are in regards to safety related issues.

im not into all that as i have a habit of leaving it running while I drop a ducer when running alone.

I was on a bus and just happened to be sitting on a news paper. This guy came up and asked. "Are you reading that ?"
I said  yes, stood up, turned the page and sat back down.

I like your ideas.
Had my old jiffy stuck on full throttle once while drilling a hole. I sliped and let go of it and then it was stuck on full throttle.
The starter rope was swinging around fully extended so I couldn't get close enough to shut it down.
It did die on it's own after a minute or two.I haven't had that problem ever again but it was interesting trying to figure out what to do.

The Pro4 has a momentary kill switch from the factory.  Not a tether cord, so it would not help if you let go at full throttle.

I used to have an old jiffy one armed bandit that had a habit of sticking wide open. Thant thing was kind of scary when it got away from you hah. The ideas you all had would have saved me a lot of trouble.

Probably should have a "kill" switch on Jiffys.  For someone who is used to using a Strkemaster, when you grab a Jiffy, it is an entirely different experience.  It's like going from having a 10 year old lab out for a walk on a leash and then switching over to a 2 year old terrier.  I posted a story here about the time I was out with my brother in law and he has a Jiffy.  Let's just say I had a bad experience involving an iced up Jiffy throttle (stuck wide open) and 50 feet of Aqua Vu camera cord with a camera on one end and the monitor on the other.  In case you were wondering, you can wrap up 50 feet of camera cable pretty fast with a 9" Jiffy running wide open.  Funny, even when it got to the point of pin-wheeling the monitor, it didn't slow down a bit.   ;D  You can read that story here if you have some free time:  http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=118599.msg1154003#msg1154003

I do like the idea of the momentary kill switch.  Every year I have to memorize which way the switch needs to be to be "on" and "off".  Then in the off-season I manage to forget again.  It doesn't help that the "on" and "off" are in micro-sized font.

After breaking the toggle lever on my 2 hp SM (twice  >:( ) and finding that a conventional toggle switch will not fit in the space allowed under the shroud I finally went to Ace and bought a momentary contact push button. I love it! I've never had a sticking throttle problem so I guess that remains to be seen.

Stops with a quick press and it's always ready to start with a pull......
