Just ordered the new Legend 48" and a Legend 24" Light.

My wife says "why do you need a big one and a little one too?"

I say, the little one if for you honey...

Her response: ::) ::) ::)

Let's just hope she doesn't see the other boxes that are coming this week.  :o

I am having a hard time coming up with a reason why I would want a spring bobber on a rod 36"+.

For standing up and fishing bluegill/crappie. Point the rod tip down over the hole and watch it.

The rods came yesterday and they look and feel great.

The guides were all dead nuts straight and the build quality looks excellent.

The 48" is featherlight and I plan on matching it with a Symetre 1000 reel.

I'm going to put a Sienna 500 on the 24", man I love that $29 reel.

I plan on doing a lot more solo outings this year so I can move around, hopefully this new 48" will be just the ticket.

The last legend I had broke in my rod case during the off season, no pressure on the line or anything. Not too keen on the quality of the graphite. Went with a Fenwick last year and loved it!

Yeah those tips are pretty thin, but that is strange you had a spontaneous failure like that.

I plan on testing these two rods out this weekend in my kayak drop shoting some small plastics.

I was getting into some nice smallies and a few large mouths last week, so hopefully they are still around and can help me with my pre-ice season testing.

Yeah and every slight breath of wind and shake from your hand makes the tip wiggle. Sounds like people use spring bobbers when fish are biting hard enough that they do not need spring bobbers and/or they are using a rod too heavy for the task at hand.

Put the flasher upwind to block your hole and hold the rod so your reel is against your leg. If its real windy, you shouldn't be standing up and fishing anyways. I always fish with the reel up against my leg, takes all the shaking out of the rod.

I'm with fry on this one...

I need a couple beers and a knee for a rest to get those st croix spring bobbers to stay still. That may just be me though.

Can you imagine what that jig must be doing when you are shaking and that spring bobber is bouncing? up down up down up down up down... fish are probably looking at it like "what the f is that?"

It's like the old strike indicator debate used when fly fishing with nymphs--I never use one and still catch fish, but others will tell you that you are missing a lot of subtle takes without one.

I have never used spring bobbers before so I will have to see if I like them.

They are jiggly little buggers though and I don't have the UL version.

The main rod I use for small jigs is an UL 24" Legend which I shortened the handle on about 2 1/2". Despite the short length the spring is still very succeptable to rod movement and/or wind. The fish in the lakes I fish are often neutral or negative and take the jig so light it just barely moves the spring bobber, even though it is very light. If you are not right on top of the spring bobber you would miss it and miss the fish. I just see a longer rod making it even harder to see.

Also I will warn you that when you store those St. Croix rods be careful not leave any stress on them. My Legends will sometimes tweak and my dads 28" UL Premier twisted all to hell in the off season despite being laid flat in a rod box during th eoff season. I had to tweak several guides to line them up again. I don't know what it is with St. Croix rods but they just seem to tweak in my experience.

Hole hopping rods are not for everyone, if your old, cold, lazy or drunk you probably wont enjoy them as much. You have to finesse the spring to do what you want your jig to do. I perfer to use other rods and add the St. Croix tip.

Touche, that's a good point. That's why I hole hop with a shorter rod and drop to my knees on the ice. I will maintain that flat ribbon style spring bobbers are much less apt to shake like they are having an epileptic seizure when old, cold, lazy and drunk guys like me are fishing with them. Flat ribbon style springs can only move up and down, this eliminates most wind movement.
