recoating inside QF3
« on: Sep 12, 2012, 07:49 PM »
Been thinking about doing some recoating or something of the sort inside my quickfish3 mainly around the seam areas on top. This last winter i had water dripping inside during some of the storms we had. On the manitoba page they were talking about using a loctite color guard product and after doing some research i have found out that its pretty hard to get by the can, mainly selling cases VERY SPENDY. Does anyone know of any other product that would work for what im needing to do? and possibly something i can pick up around where i live. Any thoughts on the flex seal they are pushing on infomercials? i know the are selling it at walmart

You are looking to waterproof it so it sheds rain, or are you just looking to seal the seams?

For my tent just seal the seams up, but my buddies tent seems to be losing the coating off the door. So for him we're thinking recoating the whole door

Tent seam sealer may be fine for the stitching. It's just a couple bucks and most hardware and sporting stores have it. Application is a pain, but it works.

as far as the coating, I have no idea what to do.

I don't remember what the inside of the Eskimo fabric is like, but if it's similar to a black rubberized coating, I use the spray rubberized tool dip ("plasti-dip" is one brand) on my Shappell Rover 2.0.  I need four cans for two coats to do the complete interior.  It works great, and was recommended by the manufacturer.  Those of you familiar with the Shappell fabric will know that it develops pin holes after extensive use, especially where it folds.  Two coats of this paint, and it looks like new, and it holds up for a couple seasons of use after each application.  Last season, I bought pipe insulation, which I cut to fit over the tent poles, and used frog tape over the zippers to keep it tidy during the spray.  Just remember to apply the paint when it is at least 50 degrees or warmer, and I suggest wearing a cheapo moon suit and a respirator.  The air gets a bit thick inside that tent.  Good luck

Does plasti dip come in a spray can now? If not, how are you spraying it?

x2 on Plasti Dip....its a bit expensive in Lowes ( canadian stores ) 25 bucks a can.. but across the border, its 6bucks... The spray stuff is awesome. It will work well for the inside of your fabric. you can even use it on automotive stuff. just look on youtube. I plan on spraying my rims with it this year.

my2 cents.

The insid of the QF3 is a rubberized coating. I do have a few of the pin holes but my buddy has alot, not including the door thats shedding fast. I will look into the plasti dip, sounds like just what we are looking for. Thanks for the tips on keeping it looking good.  Still hitting 80deg around here so it should spray just fine atleast for the next couple weeks

thanks bullcans and MegaRam, seems this is a good product for what im looking at doing

Wont the plastic dip crack when you fold up the tent in the cold?  I sprayed the outside of mine with camp dry before last season but didnt really notice a diffrence.

no, the plasti-dip remains flexible all season.  I have used the spray now for several re-applications, and it does not crack, in fact it looks just like the original coating.  I have used it in below zero cold.  It just wears off after continued use.  I considered buying a new tent at one point, but found this to be so satisfactory, that I continue to just reapply every couple of years.

Ok, dumb question time. Can a guy do this to a Clam 6800? Seems like it would help insulate as well as help darken the tent up a bit inside, something I wouldn't feel bad about. We only use my 6800 sparingly but it has a couple little "pinholes" and two little tears. I could use duct tape on just the outside before I shoot it??? Anybody with more knowledge then me have any advice?
