I'm glad you said good clear hard ice!!  Just me and a bucket with hand auger will go out on 3"-4" no problem! I know others will go out on less, but I can't hack the pucker factor anymore!!!  :woot:  :icefish:

I'll go out on 3 to 4 inches of good hard ice, but I limit myself on what body's of water I will fish, like very shallow ponds or bays. I was young and dumb before, 2" or less is not even consideration.

I've been on ponds early and drilled a test hole, found 2" of ice, puckered up and retreated!! I'm not as light as I used to be!! ;D ::)

I see there are some ppl on here not from Sd,  What time of year do you all get on lakes or ponds and get started fishing.  I know about mid Dec. I am getting on orman and it seems the best walleye fishing west river is the first 2 or 3 weeks then it slows down.

I've been on the ice here in eastern SD early as Thanksgiving, but most of the time it's in December sometime.

I can usually get on up in the hills on turkey day. Last year the Mrs. and I didn't feel like having a big dinner, so I went out and got us some perch. Best Thanksgiving ever! When we start the countdown to ice here in SD, we use Thanksgiving for a marker. Actually last year Oyler got on a week before!    I agree with the guys who wait a while...I don't care for that pucker factor any more. We have about 4 inches at T-day and that is good clear ice, normally.

In VT, trout doesn't open until 2nd Saturday in Jan. December is good for Perchin' & Pike as long as the ice is there. Usually if your on the ice by XMAS, it's a decent year.

Around late December we found some safe ice to start our season here in Northern NY. still pucker a little until there is a good 6 inches everywhere.

My Biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my gear for what i said i paid for it.

As we get closer to having some good fishable ice. We can start thinking about the get-together. Sparks might be available to help put this on and even throw in some prizes from Ice Force  ;D.

Most of you probably have already been tinkering with all your equipment. As for me, it starts tomorrow. Going to go get my Otter flip-over and Otter box out of the enclosed trailer. Going to put the windshield back on for the winter and bolt the Otter box on the back of the atv. I need to work on some ideas for compartments in the box so I can have thing separated and not banging into each other. I'm also going to take the cover off the Otter Cottage and check out the tubing. This is a older but brand new flip over Otter that I picked up from a guy in Mankato, MN back in March. I don't think the guy put one together before and the tubes seem to really slide out hard. I then need to figure what I'm going to do for the seat for it. I picked up the bench seat, but not sure yet if that's what I'm going to use it in it yet. I have so many ideas, but not enough cash as usual. The old ticker seems do be doing well now and hopefully the health issues are behind me for a while. Medical bills pretty much ate up my fun money for the year, but I'm slowly making a come back with some funds. Hopefully I wasn't to boring, but I am PUMPED for this season. I might even do the LOTW's trip in January (finally)...

Thanks, boxcar
