First trip ever to Minnewasta.
« on: Feb 22, 2012, 07:08 PM »
I'm planning on heading out to Lake Minnewasta I want to try my hand at catching some Crappie. I have never fished this species before so I'm going to buy a light action rod and some tackle this week. Does anyone have any favourite lures, bait, jigs, plastics etc. for catching fat slabs. Any tips or tactics and locations on the lake? If yah don't want to share your favourite hot spot publicly you can pm me lol! Thanks for any feedback much appreciated!  :icefish:

make sure u have spring bobbers and some super small jigs, when they are slow you almost cant see the bite even when watching,
tiny red glow jig worked for me

Make sure you have light line 4 or less
Last weekend I caught a some on small PK Spoons tipped with a piece of minnow
18 ft deep just off about 300 or 400 yards off to the right of the boat launch
It  a very small area  you can see where guys are fishing easliy
I'm no expert at it by no means that was my first time but not my last, Nice Little Place

Sonars a must and a slow presentation

Good Luck
You come to me on this day of my daughters Wedding, And ask me to go fishing....Well O.K LETS GO

small jigs with small live minnows work well.fished in 16 feet of water.the bite gets real good when the sun goes down.caught 23 last time out most were caught between 5:30 and  7. also used a bloodworm and power magot glow jigs seem to work best.

Keep drilling holes until you find them. I don't even drop a line down until I'm marking fish. Once you find them its not hard to stay on them as they move around. A spring bobber will be your best friend out there! Good luck

Thanks alot for all the tips gonna do some shopping tonight for gear and try and bang some slabs tomorrow evening. How thick is the ice on the lake and are there any spots of weak ice to watch out for?

Most were fishing right of the boat launch area
I didn;t see anything out of the ordinary

Thickness was about 28 to 30 inches

Good Luck

Not good in terms of fish 1 bite only. But talked to a local out there with permanent shack and he helped me out with presentation of jigging and some tackle to get. So I got new gear and new tactics trying again tomorrow night.

Was out there today for the first time and it was slow. Only caught two but one over 12". Would only bite on a dead stick. Even my coffee tremor was too much movement. Didn't try live bait, but I am not sure if it would have helped.

P.s. A big thanks to the guys in the permie for giving my truck a boost. I probably shouldn't have listened to the radio all day :-\

I'm going to be down around Minnewasta this weekend. Is crappie the main species there or are there walleye and pike too?

good luck with that. much better chance of catching a pike then a walleye. Not many of either species. At least not in any real numbers. When a walleye hits 14" in that lake... it's lunch for someone

^^ lol I know, I have enough trouble catching any fish in that place, never mind something big enough to eat. Last fall we went for a few hours trolling, I had a small pike and I lost one a ways out that would have been to small to eat, pike or walleye. We basically use the lake in spring for a few minutes to see how the boat is working, lol.
