A buddy of mine used/uses his in the boat, he keeps the normal ice fishing float on it and hangs it over the side. It is hard to jig below it like you do ice fishing because you are typically using long rods, wave action, boat movement and as mentioned above all the stuff in the water. But it still works great to show bottom type and fish. I had a puck transducer mounted on my bow mount trolling motor for my FL-18 and it worked great for showing fish and while open water trolling it showed what depth the walleye were suspending at. You may be able to use it like you do when ice fishing when the conditions are just right and you may want to take an ice rod along as well.
