How much strain is on the ice?
« on: Feb 24, 2012, 02:07 PM »
Was moving some gear around today.    Just how much strain is there on the ice when we go fishing?

Eskimo Mako=30 lbs
2 skimmers  = 4 lbs
7 rods          =8 lbs   If you use 2lb test,  if you use 4 lb test it is obviously double
Electronics    =5 lbs.
3x6 inch lure box=435 lbs
lure box with Tungsten jigs =206 lbs
flip-over shanty =35 lbs.
maggots and waxies=.05 lbs.
junk in the bottom of the bucket=14 lbs.
Weight of the fisherman=your results may vary

Did you miss a decimal? :o  You carry over 600lbs of lures and tungsten jigs out on the ice? ;D

A point was missed but not the decimal point.
I was just exagerating a teeny weeny bit.
My point(not the decimal) was how many little jigs I have accumulated.  And that I sometimes ;) just pitch something into the bucket to deal with later and before you know it the bottom is covered with 14 lbs of junk.
But, I should have known I would never get 435 lbs of jigs and over 200 lbs of tungsten lures past you'se guys.

Don't have to try to get it past me - it sounds very much like my spoon box, or my jigging rap box or my, or my.....!!!!  Last time out, I was thinking about all the lures I carry out that I never use.  But, you just never know when someone will say "they are hitting "X" lure", and I probably have some in the bottom of my bucket!

Good fishing,

Keith

Chain lures are one of my favorites.  I like to pull somebody's once in awhile.

What is most interesting about ice strain is when we have 7" or so and you have a bunch of people with all their gear in one area.  I often wonder how much GOOD ice it would truly take to hold a full size truck.  There are spots around here early ice (7") with 20 permanents, 4 wheelers, snowmobiles, fisherman, their gear, etc all in small areas.

You wont see me testing this theory..............bu t I am guessing a small amount of good solid ice can hold a lot of weight.

That is exactly why the wheel was invented, or better know as the wheeler. You do not have to be concerned about the strain there is none. Actually there is some strain it is on the thumb where it meets the throttle. 6lbs.

I generally bring a couple of 12-packs that's another 19.65 lbs. The stress is a lot less, but I'm not sure about the strain.

I have been on thin ice and had it start to bend down and water was flowing trough the hole. Decided to retreat right quick.
OK Cargo, add a couple hundred pounds for the wheeler.  Might have to leave half the jigs at home.

I don't think the question is how much strain is on the ice, but how much stress is there out on the ice.  This is why we go when we get the chance because it is nearly zero.! ??? ;D

Courtesy of US. Army Engineers  h=4*(squroot P)
h=thickness of ice,  P=Weight  (Your weight divided by 2000. = Desimal)

Minimum ice thickness required to support a load  Load (tons). 1Ton=2000lbs  Required ice thickness (inches). This is for clear ice. If ice is bubble or white divide by answer by two.  So ruffly 4 inches can hold a ton, well I guess I'm chicken because I wont start adventuring out until at least 3-4 inches and having a rope handy and I guess my scale is off. I just weight 280lbs so doing the math I need 1.5 inch's to hold me.

Tons           inchIce        Distance between loads

0.1               2              17
1                  4              34
2                  6              48
3                  7              58
4                  8              67
5                  9              75
10               13            106
20               18            149

No one left behind.

This is great!  What is the unit for the distance between loads?  Miles, kilometers, inches, feet?
I once saw a graphic on the amount of ice required to support a train.  The ties were important in distributing the load.  Maybe Wyoutdoors would volunteer the equipment and to be test pilot for this experiment.

15 years ago at the Fremont Derby in Pinedale they used to have a parking lot on the ice at the weigh in station.  Many thousand pound trucks all lined up.  Ice is amazingly strong.
