Really?!?! Didn't know that... how'd they kill them all off?

They poison them with rodenine to kill off the pike and perch. Once all the fish are dead they stock it.

Yup, poison and it generally takes at least two years to complete it.
Funny this comes up, I was having a conversation with my dad at codette
last week and he was telling me about some of the lakes which had
amazing fishing for walleye and pike just to come back and find out it
had been poisoned/killed off.

REALLY? This is by far the dumbest thing I have ever heard! It's not that I don't believe it, it's just that I can't believe that anyone would think that this is a good idea.

Why would it be such a bad idea to kill of a lake with poison?  IF you decide that you want non-native trout species and lakes in Saskatchewan, and in a variety of locations - how else do you go about doing it?  Practically every water body in Saskatchewan that isn't a ditch has perch in them.

Sweet fish man, Next time when practicing c+r try not to get snow on fish.  There skin eyes and gills are very sensitive. The more us fisherman can do towards the preservation of these awesome fish and the education of fellow anglers, the better.  Again awesome fish, not knocking your fish handeling, just sharing knowlege for a lifetime of awesome catches like yours.
Fishing is a tough job, but im willing to Tackle it!

i'm still a rookie, and yet i'm the most experienced of my friends.
this was my first fish ever on a tip-up. any by far by biggest fish through the ice.
though i'm well aware of the the dangers to a fish when out on the ice, i had no idea how to get a fish that big out of the hole, so it was a learning experience for sure. i think you're expecting too much of me.
at least i used a single barbless hook so that came right out, and the fish wasn't out of the water for more than a 1/2 minute to a minute.
it's like when ppl got mad at me for filleting for the first time and butchering the fish.
i'm sure i'll do better next time.

i don't think that respecting a beast of that magnitude is asking too much, from a rookie or veteran.  tipupfrenzy laid out some good information there and if i were you i'd soak it up like a sponge.  if at all possible i like to get control of the fish by the gill plate while still in the hole and remove hook this way.  you'd be surprised how calm most fish will stay when you've got em like this.  then lift gently out of the water for your picture/measurement - all of this can and should be done with the fish horizontal.  a small tarp helps out and can be made wet when you need to lay the fish down.

no offense intended, just trying to help.  i guess the point is that catch and release is pointless without proper fish handling procedures.

Great fish Dooman. I still haven't caught one that big. Don't worry about negative responses, people are just trying to help. Again way to go.

no worries just seems people always find something to criticize, but i understand on a forum like this it's just an opportunity for a post to educate others.  it astonishes me how good internet fisherman are though, everyone always seems to catch more fish, handle their fish better, etc. Like I seriously try to do everything I can do be a good fisherman, but i make mistakes, and don't catch enough fish. I think it was hard to handle a huge pike out of the ice for the first time.

Nobody criticized you, you were simply offered friendly advice for your future catches.

Criticizing would be making fun of your barbless J hook setup, crap eating grin or how you hold fish for pictures.  :P

Im only kidding, but there are lots of good fishermen on here and they are only trying to help. Now that you know, im sure you will do better next time as practice is the only way to get better.

Nice fish and congrats on a new personal best! This is the best month for big pike so get out there and find a 20 pounder.

Nice fish.
Don't worry about how you handled it or if you butcher a few fish while cleaning them. Like you said you are learning and trying your best. There isn't a single person that I know of that did everything the way it should be done the first time doing it. After you catch, handle, and clean a few more fish you will be the one handing out advice to others.

I really don't think that anyone was trying to give you crap or anything it's just hard to read the tone in some of the post's.

Has anyone ever seen or heard of anyone handling pike by grabbing them by the eyes? Saw a video on YouTube and heard from some ppl that they have seen that before. I thought it was retarded. How could someone think handling them this way and releasing them would be good for them.

Perfect place to grab them!   Used to happen all the time but its turns out it wasn't so great for the pike's eyes if you were planning to release the fish. Go figure.   There are still a lot of fish handling problems out there but at least this one seems to have faded away.
