I fished Lake Memphemagog for Smelt
« on: Feb 13, 2012, 01:41 PM »
So i made my first of many visits of many trips to Newport, VT to fish maygog on Saturday morning. The fishing was slow from 7 to about 9:30 and i was not  catching many smelt , so i figure i use one greatest tools and my new favorite toy i bought this year and that is my color and black/white Sony HD camera from vexilar that came with my double vision set up from vexialr. Once  i put the camera down in the water i could see smelt hanging very close to the bottom of the lake and i was in 20 feet of water by the twin island where the shanty town is. I did not see massive schools of smelt which i was hoping only 10-15 smelt at a time. After watching the reaction of the smelt to my jig i could easily pick off the smelt from the bottom because i could see the bite before i felt the bite and i ended up catching allot more smelt because of it. From 9:30 to 12:30 i ended up catching about 125 more smelt . i love Maygog and i love going up there and i hope to come back real soon and fish the big derby up there for the first time.
I do all types of fishing; but I am Die hard Ice angler.
I love Ice Fishing the lakes of Rutland County. Recently moved to NY and now will be Ice fishing the Lakes Of New York.

great report !
i think those cameras make the differance with smelt sometimes when they bite light ...i ve noticed from just looking down the hole and "lifting" them out VS feeling the bite...

Farewell and adieu, to you fair spanish ladies. Farewell and adieu, you ladies of Spain. For we've just received orders, for to sail back to Boston. And so nevermore, shall we see you again.

I fished magog today from 9 to noon! Caught my limit of big perch! [Nothing huge, 10 inches biggest] A dozen smelt and through back 30 or so perch under 8 inch! Had a good time overall and the perch bit well!

Sounds like great action.  I'm taking my 10-year old son there this weekend.  Would you mind revealing what general area of the lake you were fishing?
