Anyone use the "little buddy" heater?
« on: Dec 05, 2011, 07:49 PM »
Am wondering if anyone uses the little buddy heater to heat a 1 man shanty? (The kind that just screws to the top of a small propane tank like a golf cart heater). I have a one man shack and am wondering how well and fast it will heat up in there with one if these. My lantern heated my guide 2 man shanty up really fast, but I dont want the lantern in the one man because itd have to sit too close for comfort to the side of the tent.

My buddy uses one in a 2 man and it got nice and toasty in there so I think you should be good in a 1 man.

Yes, I use one in a Clam Fish Trap Scout one man. I find it about perfect. The Big Buddy I use in the two man was way too warm and took up too much space.

I had one anI sold it for a sunflower to go on a 20 lb tank. Its small and easily portable, and the tanks are nice, but I found it was absoluitely a nightmare to start. The tanks or heater cant be a little bit cold, and half the time you need to heat the core with a lighter. Thats the only reason I didnt like it. It should heat a 1 man good, but anything bigger I wouldnt think so, didnt really heat my Eskimo 2 man well.

I would imagine that the little buddy could burn you right out of a one man shanty if you wanted it to.  My regular heater buddy has burned me out of my two man on occasion with the low setting.  I think that it would be the perfect size for what you are using it for.

Yep...should work fine.  I've used mine in a bigger pop-up, wasn't quite enough, but put out a lot more heat than i expected.

I have one I use in my fish trap scout, I open the side windows to let some of the heat out. It warms up fast and hot.

I have one that I use in my fishtrap.  I find that it makes this annoying whistling noise on the low setting, and gets too hot on the high setting.  It is also prone to blowing out which I don't care for.  Does anyone else notice the whistling?  I don't use it anymore because of that.  Any fixes?

HodakaD - That is the "Buddy" heater you are talking about and mine does the same noise on low, i built a wind block for my pilot light so it doesn't blow out so easy. PFB was asking about the "little buddy".

Thanks for the replies. I ended up going with the buddy as opposed to the little buddy. I like the design of the buddy better and it will more easily stow in the sled. I plan on just kicking it to pilot when it gets too warm. Mainly just got it for the really really cold days and the fact I dont have to worry so much about a lantern burning the side of my tent. Installed a rope light for lighting.

This thread is confusing.  There are 3 basic models of Buddy heaters: Big Buddy (square box, 4000, 9000, 18000 BTU/hr), Portable Buddy (square box, 4000 and 9000 BTU/hr), and Little Buddy (Screw-on cap for 1-lb propane bottles, 3800 BTU/hr).  The Little Buddy only has 1 speed.  Sounds like lots of the replies were referring to the Portable Buddy 2-speed heater.  I am wondering if any of these are any better than a Coleman lantern?  The lantern tends to melt anything it touches - do the Buddy heaters do the same?  I saw another post about cooking on a Buddy heater - how can this be done?

I use mine to heat my fat fish 949. It does ok, keeps it comfortable but not as warm as some others do. I also have a shappell two man with the floor in it and it would almost over heat that one. So if you are looking to heat a one man I think you would be fine.

Where do you keep the little buddy when in use, so that it does not melt thngs?  In my Scout TC one-man, putting it in front of the hole puts the door and sides at risk of melting if the wind blows them around.  Putting it behind me in the tub would put all sorts of loose things at risk, especially since it looks top-heavy and tip-able.  Between me and the hole puts lines at risk.  Not sure if these things are "mountable" somehow to keep them vertical and out of the way of anything that could melt.  That makes a good argument for the Portable Buddy, which is wall-mountable.  Where do you all put your heaters when in use?

Since nearly everyone has a little different way of setting up in their portable you just need to find an available spot and be careful not to get anything too close to the high heat that will burn or melt. The Little Buddy really throws some heat!

It works fine for me in my scout. I set mine in the front left coner because i'm right handed and it sets high enough for me too set my vex in front of it. Take off my coat and I'm good too go.
