For that price you can't beat it. When I bought mine I was worried it would be slow in the cold but I was wrong.

Buy a 79 dollar Eagle and put the skimmer on a stick.  Really it's that simple.

Genius!  I have my skimmer mounted to an old tipup.  Clumsy but it works.  Oddly enough I was at Cabelas today asking about an ice transducer for the Eagle.  I think I'm s.o.l.

A suggestion on the lines of the original post;
I use a Garmin 300C Fish finder that I picked up for my boat last year. I was able to get this great color unit new for $225 including shipping. It has every feature that I could want including; zoom, Split screen, battery voltage, temp, Dual beam (15 or 45 degree), gain that has 100 points, great separation, flasher screen if you want old school and many more features. I put the boat transducer on a old tip up frame and the unit is in a small lunch box with the battery. I see guy getting $400 units that have the same features... Garmin is in the USA and has always been great with customer service for me.

I feel into a sweet deal on a fl-12 pro pak, the guy was moving to Florida and getting rid of his gear.  He sold me his vex and a gas auger for $300.  I turned around and sold the auger for $150.  So I got a used (1 year old) vex for $150.  I can't imagine fishing without one now.  My point is I know money is tight, I could never afford a new vex but look around and pick up a used one.  If they are not abused they last a very long time.  I think you can even get a refurbished flasher from the vex website.  Get a used one if you can't afford a new one and you will be amazed.

It will not help this season but give it a couple of months. If cost is 'the major factor', and you really want a flasher, the end of the season is the best time to find used equipment. Plus this gives the added benny of being able to sock away a few more bones. eh.
