Save up your pennies and get the x67c Ice machine. Look around for deals.

Do you want to use it for open water fishing as well? Maybe on a row boat or kayak?

Might want to call thorne bros direct when ordering.  Their website is not "live" website.  I ordered o friday night called on saturday morning to verify i would be getting one and they put aside the last one they had to be shipped to me on monday it should be arriving any minute.  Just checked their site and it is no longer on there.  Matt Had said they'd been flying out of the warehouse.  Happy hunting.......

Yes im looking for something that would do both, with either an easy mod or a cheap second transducer

It would be nice if you could get a lower model that uses the same mount, case and transducer as a higher end unit. That way when you are ready to upgrade, you will only need the head unit. The HB 160 uses a different base than the 300 series and up. If I were in your position I would probably save what money I could and keep watching ebay, amazon and other places until the right deal showed up. I can't help much with the Lowance units.

well reeds has the eagle 350c portable on sale for $209.99 with free shipping  at least it would be color.  I think it's essentially the same unit as an x67c.

I just passed on my old Eagle 320DF I made portable as my first ice unit. It worked pretty well on the ice, and on small boats. That 350c is probably a good multi purpose unit for the money. I always liked having the duel frequency though.
