Sacandaga: Sand Island Area....Help PLEASE
« on: Jan 29, 2012, 05:23 PM »
Looking to do some fishing next weekend in the sand island area, I was wondering if anyone knew ice conditions for around there. Where is the nearest boat launch for a couple of trucks and trailers...lastly where can a guy get some bait around there? Thank you very much for any info!

I was cutting a solid 10 inches saturday. Daves baits off rt 30. I think its bunker hill rd. We went out of the broadalbin st boat launch, plenty of parking.

daves bait is a long way from the broadalbin state boat launch.  not sure what you are looking for but Franks Gun Shop is just outside of Broadalbin.  not sure what they have.  I use Jims Bait Shop in Mayfield myself.

I would go to world famous Dave's Bait on bunker hill road. He takes very good care of his bait. Its worth the extra ride :icefish: :icefish:

he is right about Dave taking care of his bait, I went there once and he was giving his large shiners all massages and he bought a hot tub for his smelt.  Not really sure what that means that he takes care of his bait.  I have never had any issues with Jims bait.

I find his prices to be in the ballpark with other bait shops,Yes he has larger baits for the toothy critters, SS you are very negative toward Dave's bait. No one ever said that other bait shops were a problem? SS a little common curticy goes a long way. The member of iceshanty asked a few ?s ,just trying to give him a few options. :icefish:

Mr SS Minnow

Both Dave's Bait & Tackle and Jim's Bait Shop in Mayfield are great bait shops that give great customer service and basically sell the same quality bait (since they both purchase minnows from the same bait distributors). I get the impression that you are loyal to Jim, but that gives you no reason to berate Dave's Bait & Tackle. I do not see anyone else giving negative connotations to Jim's Bait Shop. I believe a dose of maturity is needed.

Mr oneidawalleye,
I did not saying anything bad about Daves.  I actually go to there every so often to buy my bait.  I think it is a great shop and he has a lot of great stuff on top of the bait.  It was just a funny statement that "Dave takes care of his bait".  Sounds like a dose of lighten up is needed in your part.

you were the one that made it sound like Dave "takes care of his bait" like other bait shops around here do not.  a little common curticy does go a long way, you should try to use some.

You guys are all wrong.  You have to goto Pauls Bait shop in speculator if you want the best taken care of bait and  the best customer service.  LOL

I interpeted it the same way as SSminnow,  that Dave is the  only bait shop that takes care of his bait.

I buy from both Jim and Dave's Bait shop.  Both are great guys and have good bait.  I personally go to  Jim's more.

I would ask Dave and Jim what their interpretion of these posts are. or maybe a moderator. My intent was to give the member other options. Not to start a debate.Anyway I'm done on this thread, sorry nightrunner was just trying to help

Ice conditions should be OK. After this past weekends fishing contest, we heard of no issues with the ice. Everyone was reporting  8 to 10 inches most everywhere. As for Sand Island I would say the best public location to get onto the ice would be Broadalbin launch site. That also would not be too long of run to get you into the Sand Island area. NOW, for the bait. I would take it that you are coming from Albany area. Not sure of bait shops you would pass on your way so you may have to go to one of the local shops. Franks would prob. be the closest but I am not sure he opens early. Jims would be next. He is open early everyday, just ring the bell. Good bait and he carries most everything you might need. Next up Rt 30 is Daves Bait. He has pike shinners and suckers most of the time for pike fishing and is open early every morning. Jim and Dave can point you in the right direction. The price of the bait at all will be within reason. Have a good time, be safe and hope you don't run into some of the people who post on here....lol....hunts2l ong
