ball eagle lake.. vehicles thru!!
« on: Jan 27, 2012, 12:46 AM »
just wanted to let everyone know that numerous cars/people thru on ball eagle lake!! even though MN has seen some colder temps, it doesnt always mean its safe!! the ice has been extremely weird this year!! most often its been coming down to the thickness/strength ratio!... with the freeze/melt routine going on, the ice is only really half the strength compared to the thickness!! we had a 7x16 wheelhouse go thru up here on north long with 11" of ice around it!! use common sense out there and be safe!!

may you have tight lines and good times, we'll see you on the water

You are referring to Bald Eagle, correct?

There has been trucks & cars falling in all over the metro.  2 through prior for sure, and if I had to bet there will be some going down on spring.  I was at spring last Saturday and there were tons of cars & trucks out there, wheel houses all over...  I had 12" of ice where I was  ???  This has been the most unusual year I can remember for some time, I think we only had 1 night below 0.

Be safe!!

Yeah, the Bald Eagle thing is a bit weird.

I fish there often and was out there about 1 month ago. At that time there was 6-7 inches of nice black ice. My friends ventured to Cigar island out in the middle of the lake. Even then, there was a small stream of open water that was pouring out into the lake and was actually quite large.

As of 2-3 weeks ago, the ice was 9" inches, but that same area around the island was still open to some extent.

The car or trucks that have gone in are all in the same vicinity I believe. I would wager to say 95% of the lake is safe, but not knowing the spots makes it unsafe for most people. Any person walking around out there would or should be fine as long as they avoid that 1 area.

All that said, you just never know. I saw on another post, someone just went through on White Bear Lake..about 1 mile from Bald Eagle. Same deal there, I drove out there Wednesday night on know areas of 12-15". Yet there are bad spots that apparently some didn't know about. I plan to drive out again Sat am, but I know what areas to avoid. I wouldn't drive on any lake in the metro if i didn't know the lake somewhat.

Again, always a risk no matter what. The good news, no one is dying or getting hurt as far as I have seen.
Why?
....Because I can't can't Golf with Ice on the lake!

The last two days I've been on white bear, lots and lots of people driving out.  There's only 14 or so inches of ice but when a car goes by it really sounds bad.  I've heard a lot of cracking before but this is really severe, and they are all bunching together out of bellaire beach.  I'm convinced someone will go in this week.  Especially with this warm period we're supposed to get.  Would be nice if there was a way to warn them without closing the lake.
