Think beaver dam can repair this????
« on: Jan 24, 2012, 12:20 AM »
First time posting pics from my phone. So hopefully the images aren't too big. Can't resize them on the photobucket app.

Had it set literally 5 feet away from my shanty and a jerk on a snowmobile joyriding ran it over. He had no buisness flying past me 5 feet away. Just glad the tip up got wrecked and not me. How do you guys prevent tip ups from getting hit? Anything you can put next to them that snowmobilers don't want to hit?  Since I'm guessing this guy did it on purpose.

Sorry for you loss there. I am sure they can fix it but i do not know what they would reuse on that one.  I know fleet farm has the jolly rogers for $40 bucks. I am sure a new one is the cheaper way to go.  May i ask what happened?

I put wood stakes next to mine that i paint black and orange. Does it help no. I have never had one run over but close.  Some snowmobilers are not fisherman they just look at a lake as miles of wide open straight aways to open there sleds up.

Try stuffed animal skunks. No one wants to hit those.

Sorry for you loss.

Repair the wood by drilling thru both pieces and glue in wood plugs. Take apart mechanism, heat and straighten. If that don't work maybe you can have mechanism rebuilt by Beaver Dam.

I'm just going to get a few new ones with income tax money. Definitely going to invest in some markers. I like camp's idea. Stuffed skunks!!

Many years ago when I was knee high to a grasshopper, my dad got me my first set of beaver dams for Christmas.  Low and behold that same season an idiot was using our spread as a race course for his sled and ran over my brand new tip up.  Now my father and his partner with a good case of beer in them decided to load up the gear and follow the snowmobile tracks to one of the bars on the lake.  Now at this time the old man is driving a rusty old 75 chevy impala and he pulls up to the brand new snowmobile parked next to the bar.  Front bumper just a mere hair from the sled.  We go into the bar and my old man and his fishing buddy start asking around as to owns the new snowmobile.  Now this pissed up fellow comes forward ten feet tall and bullet proof and wants to know why the old man is asking.  The old man tells the guy he owed me a new tip up. The snowmobiler than laughs and asked the old man what he was going to do about.  The old man points out the window to the car and tells the guy he is about to loose his new sled.  Needless to say the guy had to borrow some money from a couple of his friends to come up with the $20.00 to replace the beaver dam.  He must have spent all his money on that sled, and yes it has been many years ago because now you couldn't touch a beaver dam for 20 bucks.

RIP Dad & Mike and thanks for all the memories

I don't know about the stuffed skunk trick. Skunks hibernate up here in winter.  Paint a badge and police emblem on all 4 sides of your shack, Nobody will come within a mile of it    Steve

Yeah that was me. My shack has reflective on it so you can see it with head lights. I'm definitely glad it was the tip up, and not me.

I didn't plan on staying after dark, never do. But was finally marking some fish, and stayed a little later. A lesson learned. I'm bringing lights if I need them or not.

Although, I have had them buzz that close in the middle of the day many times. Most keep there distance, but you get the hot rods out there that think they're cool. What scares me is most of them hauling a$$ at night are bar hopping on there sleds, and nothing steers on a dime on ice! Especially after they're all boozed up.

This is what I did to my tip ups. Cut a piece of dowel and screw it to the tip up from the bottom. Put some reflective tape on some pvc and slide it over.

Last week some idiots came within a foot of one of my new Frabill Classics.

Nice. Cheap and effective. Right up my alley. I like to modify things better than buying me them anyways. Thanks for the pics.

The low profile tip ups are great for certain things, like lite bitting fish, on a small pond with no snow.   But if there is snow they get drifted over and you cant see the flag well if its out over 100yds.   I stopped using them years ago b/c of that same reason.  I go tired of my traps getting lost/run over.  I switched to a large profile trap like the Heritage lakers and put Reto tape up top near the flag spring.  That way it shows up in low light conditions.   That trap is a gonner,   buy a new one.   May I suggest a Heritage laker, or a Jack trap.

I've never used the heritage or jack traps. I like the beaver dams because they are the smoothest I've personally seen. Every HT, frabill, or off brand I used were stiff. The BD would spin freely with just the weight of a swivel tied to the dacron. I like the visibility aspect of the heritage. But looks way too bulky for me. I like to travel light and compact.

BD's are nice, don't get me wrong.  They are definelty a good trap for certain conditions.  Visibilty wise if you like to spread your gear out over a 100yds your gonna run into problems with seeing them.   Or someone else seeing them.  On snowy days where its blowing and drifting bad its gonna get buried and run over.   Something sticking up out of the snow a foot or two you'll atleast know where you left your trap.   Good luck finding another BD to match the rest of your jolly roger set.
