ice conditions by goose point campground
« on: Jan 27, 2012, 10:29 AM »
how is it up there?  i want to introduce the kids tomorrow to ice fishing, but want to make sure they have a good time.  sounds like my original destination of nelson pond is wet on top, and slushy, so thats out.  and i wont do a reservoir, i don't trust them at all.  the kids mom/my gf, has a camper at the goose point c.g., so all the kids are familiar with the place, which would make it more fun for them.  but, i would like for the ice to be decent for them, ie not too wet or sloppy.  so, how's it looking up that way? or perhaps Joe's pond, has to be somewhere that they can catch perch (we dont do sunfish or crappies,at least not on purpose, those are trash fish to be left on the ice!) fairly constant.

Silly rookies, traps are for animals!!  Tilts are for kids!!  Fishermen use tip ups!

I wouldn't say trash fish, those two fish provide not only many anglers with food and sport, but bigger game fish forage so they can grow. I think we all would appreciate people not leaving fish to waste on the ice just because they don't directly benefit them. theirs a much larger picture here. Plus, they're as good or better eating than perch IMO, so just because you don't care for them doesn't mean you have to kill them for no reason
As for the ice, I'm guessing it's going to take a few days or more of good cold weather before any water body isn't all slop after this rain/warm

Naw, I don't usually leave any kind on the ice, except for the really, really wormy perch, and thats only once in a blue moon.  Heck, at this point, it's been so many years I cant even recall the last time I dropped a line through a hole!  Glad the kids are big enough to go now and seem to be coming around to giving it a try, thats why I am looking for the driest spot possible for them.

Well hopefully you can fun some dry ground for them, we took a few kids out fro south Carolina who only had one day they could go and it was blistering cold, probably fifteen below with wind chill, I don't think they will be going ice fishing again, not a big deal living below the ice belt.. It may be a little while before you have dry ice though
