Jiffy Gearcase Lube?
« on: Jan 20, 2012, 01:18 PM »
I have a jiffy model 30 that is at least 15 years old and have never changed the gear lube.I figured it must be time to change it.
It runs good but last time out it was -23*f and it took a little while for me to get it spinning. I figured changing the gearlube might help.
I tried Google and Jiffy's website but can't seem to find what the recommended gear lube is.
Anybody know what type/grade of grease/lube I should use?
Also is there anything to watch out for when doing this ? Will I need a new Gasket?
I was thinking if the gasket looked bad I could always use some RTV silicone gasket stuff for this but I might just order a new gasket from Jiffy.
Thanks in Advance

my old jiffy model 30 had a grease fitting on the bottom of the gear case and i just used to give it a few pumps of standard grease from the same gun that i used on my trucks   axel joint and ball joints

It's just grease and if it works right it probably doesn't need changing.  Taking a while to spin may have been the clutch, so take it apart and check that.  You can take old grease off of gears and regrease with fresh low temp waterproof grease, bearing grease, whatever you've got.  You won't need a new seal as long as you're semi-careful, and if you did rip it I don't see any reason why a little RTV wouldn't solve the problem, it's not like you're sealing in a liquid under pressure or anything!

You'd probably best consult with Jiffy, but I would think that an EP grease with lots of moly like CV boot grease would work well.

I droped my STX pro while loading into my truck a few ( 3) years back...cracking the composit gear case....when I assembled the new gear case.. it originaly had very little grease that was red in nature... I used Qucik silver ( marine grease) 24C grease  sparcely on the gear teeth and any friction surfaces.. this is the grease that is used from Mercury for their steering shafts and to lube propeller splines.. it is a very good all temp grease..... the oilite bearings ( bronze) got a few drop of synthetic super lube with teflon... I've used it as low a -10.. never an issue...you only need enough grease in the gears to negate the back lash and keep the gears quiet...in this case less is more..

Good to know Roccus

The composite ones were supposedly filled with synthetic lube.  Your comments about just coating the gears makes sense.  Mine was pretty noisy initially then quieted down once run in.  May have just needed the grease to work onto the gears a bit.

more grease won't hurt anything and would help transfer heat from the gears....not sure if heat buildup on those gears is an issue at all but if you have extra in there you don't even have to worry about it.

go easy on the grease.. excess greas will cause friction  and heat.. cold grease will rob your engine of H.P.... you only need enough to coat the meshing parts... the excess will only pack into a  corner of the case or leak out the seal... over greasing is the #1 reason for bearing failure in High speed applications ( industrial blowers and motors and spindles in high speed machinery... less is more.)....
