Best spot for slob perch???
« on: Jan 17, 2012, 11:34 PM »
buddies and I have a trip booked on Chautauqua in late February but starting to wonder if we will have ice... we are looking to try a new spot with the potential for a bucket of good sized perch. Most of the group is based in Western New York but we are willing to drive a distance to get to safe ice / good fishing and make an extended weekend out of it - any suggestions???

lake ontario bays
" There is a road, no simple highway, between the dawn and dark of night, And if you go no one may follow, That path is for your steps alone.  Ripple in still water,When there is no pebble tossed,Nor wind to blow.  You who choose to lead must follow, But if you fall you fall alone, If you stand then who's to guide you? If I knew the way then I would take you home."  Robert Hunter & Jerry Garcia

2X Ont. Bays or Lake Erie if it freezes. Any a smaller waters people would likely keep to themselves.

Hey Trapper, think the person was looking for ice. That's not going to happen on Seneca. I saw it skimmed over in the sixties, lasted one day. The last time it was froze so a person could walk all over it was I believe 1912. Now if I wanted decent perch, as one stated, Sodus bay if it ever gets good ice. Keep contacting "Warrens" hook line and sinker for information. The later in the season the better. The larger perch move in from the big lake. Most any waters you are going to have to cull through perch to put large ones (10+) in the bucket. I have also witnessed good catches of perch from the north end of Canandaigua Lake and the north east branch of Keuka Lake. Neither are locked up yet.  Good luck !!  JTP

Sodus has the most consistant catches of large perch (in our experiences).  @)

I highly doubt it will freeze this year...but Canandaigua has some absolute slobs in it.  I have seen many 14-16 inch perch taken out of there, and also had days where I have limited out with my smallest fish being 10 inches.

Sodus for the numbers with quite a few slobs thrown in or Oneida with a higher proportion of slobs with an eye or two thrown in but not quite the numbers as Sodus.
