Finally got out with the offset handles!
« on: Jan 15, 2012, 12:52 PM »
MAN!  What a difference!!   ;D

I may have to retire the drill adapter until we get over 15" (which at this point is looking kind of slim), no joke - it's that easy, crazy fast.

Why don't company's ship augers with these things?!

Any pics?  Did you make it yourself or buy?

My 30 + year old Mora has off-set handles and they work great.
One thing with off-set handles is that they require a little more co-ordination to use than the handles where you can hold one hand stationary & rotate the other.
I've seen some try to use off-set handles with very poor results.

Nope, no pics I'm afraid.  They look like the ones that come from Nils on their augers, just not as graceful if that makes sense - the Nils handles look like they were made specifically with a purpose; these, well, imitation/flattery and all that.  Still useful and adequate in all senses, just like comparing a cheap domestic compact to a Ferrari if you know what I mean.

I bought them from Strikemaster, was around 25$ or so if I remember right.  I got them to try out before making the leap to a Nils, and now that I've used it a few times, I'll make sure that all my hand augers have them.  Still trying hard to decide if the extra money is worth making the jump to a Nils over my Lazer.  The Lazer works just fine for me, and I can buy replacement blades off the shelf from four local stores.

The reason they don't all come like that is becasue they don't all cut as nice. With offset handles, you can't really put any downpressure on the auger, and with a good auger, you shouldn't have to. The cheaper augers with inline handles, the hand on top can apply downpressure while the other hand spins the drill.
