Lake of the Woods report - Jan.14
« on: Jan 14, 2012, 04:13 PM »
Left Kenora this morning by snowmobile with 2 friends, both named Jeff, and travelled mostly alongside the main snowmobile trail to just down below Shammis Island.
There is practically no snow on any of the land trails. Only an inch or two on most of the lake. There are a couple of brutal pressure cracks and ridges with 2 nasty ones at Whiskey and north of Shammis. If you are travelling by vehicle keep an eye for the detours plowed around them.

As for the fishing, Jeff number one got into a walleye while I was still setting my first rod. I thought to myself "Wow, we will be home by noon..."
Unfortunately the fishing was a bit hit and miss. Both Jeffs were catching a lot of little dinky walleye and saugers but I was not getting anything.
Finally a fish hit my jig so hard I was startled. It was the biggest of the day at a chunky 20". We all caught and released several small fish and due to a brisk, chilling wind we gave up around 2:30 and headed home. Final tally of keepers was 10 walleyes and 1 large perch.

My 4 are sitting in the sink right now thawing out. Going to be nice to have a fresh feed of walleye tonight. It's been a while.

Regards,
Glen

Nice work!  Thanks for the report!  Are people driving all over the ice roads yet up in Kenora?
Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught.

Nice work Glen!

Couple of big pressure cracks on the lakes round here too.

Roads have been in place for a few weeks, but with the goofy weather nobody was maintaining them until the pressure ridges froze up. The cold this past few days has tightened a few of the cracks up.
My buddy Mark put his truck through, butt end first right to the tailgate, into the big ridge at Whiskey two weeks ago. Where he did that there has been a little roadway chiseled through to allow one vehicle through at a time, you have to watch for it as it is a little slalom course. The road around the Shammis ridge goes a few hundred yards east, almost to the shore, before crossing and returning to the 12 Mile Portage.
Cars, vans and trucks were all over the lake yesterday. There is 16" of good ice pretty well everywhere that allows normal travel. As usually stated, if you are unfamiliar with the routes of the normal ice roads, stay off or go with somebody who knows. Don't go venturing off the roads.
Stay safe,
Glen
