Bacon Creek Trout Release - Rescheduled.
« on: Jan 10, 2012, 07:12 AM »
Bacon Creek trout release in Sioux City, Iowa, scheduled for Jan 21st, has been rescheduled for Jan 28th due to variable ice conditions.  Updates should be posted on the DNR website soon, but I was just notified this morning from Ben Wallace about the changes.

how much does it cost to get a trout stamp? I'm thinking of trying my luck on Bacon Creek here in the near future. I've only been able to fish brown's this year so far.

for my 2011 license it was 12.50.  i am gonna pick up my 2012 license tomorrow after work, so i will let you know if it has changed.

As for trying your luck with trout, its super simple on release day, anything shiny will work.  During ice release, i prefer to use minnows, they seem to go after them pretty fast.  They release the trout, it takes about 10-30 minutes for them to get used to the water, and then its game on.  During normal water, use a kastmaster spoon, and cast past the group.  Reel it in as fast as you can, the faster the better as you will get more chasing it.  The will grab it and turn, and hook themselves in the process.  Then reel them suckers in, enjoy the fight.  I highly suggest an ultralight setup during freshwater, as it makes the fight sooo much better.  They will hit minnows and spinners in open water also, but i prefer the kastmaster spoon.

also, trout seem to fair pretty find in bacon creek from fall till spring, so you can go out any time and try your luck.  about 3 weeks ago i was still catching them there.

Another tip...... if you have a nebraska license, head over to crystal cove, they just released 4500 trout last week.  nebraska doesn't have a trout stamp, so no extra costs.  out-of-state license for nebraska is 60.50 for the year, 9.50 for a single day, and 27.50 for a 3-day pass.

Castmasters and small Mepps spinners hammered them at crystal cove for last week.
