tip ups?
« on: Jan 05, 2012, 09:41 AM »
Hi guys I am pretty new to ice fishing have wanted to for years and finally started last year. This year I decided to pick up a few tip UPS to try but I am unsure how Much line to put on. I figure I have put about 80 yards or so on mine as of now 30 yards of backing with 50 yards of braid. Do you think that is enough for just about everything other then paired that is.

Most of the time you will be fishing in 60 feet of water or less. that is 20 yards, so 80 yards on a tip up is 240feet. that is more than enough!

80 yards is more than enough. I fish with jacktraps with a 3" reel  have only 65 yards on and never run out of line.

It depends where your fishing. If your fishing a good lake with lots of action for panfish, you wouldn't be able to keep your tip-ups in the water. I live in the southerntier of NY, but grew up on Lake George and lived 5 years near Sandy Pond. I would set my tip-ups for Salmon,Trout or Northerns and jig for perch. In the southerntier you don't catch that many where checking tip-ups should be an issue.

I normally jig for panfish and set tipups for pike/walleye/trout or whatever is big in the water I'm fishing, mostly pike on Champlain.  I think it would be safe to say this is the industry standard, though there are some people who rig their tipups for panfish.  Lots of good info in the tipups section of the forum.  Good luck and welcome to your new addiction.

The employment of effort, hard work, time, and energy put in locating fish will offend noone.

They do work, but tip-downs are more sensitive and when the fish are finicky, it can make a difference.  If they are hungry/aggressive, it doesn't matter, both work.

the more line you put on the easier it is for the fish to trip the tipup and take line (more line = larger diameter, gives the fish more leverage)

Not for crappie or perch... Go with fathead minnows

I use tip downs for most of my panfish fishing. Real sensitive. I just replaced all the mono line on them with backing line made for fly rods. I put 15-20 yards on, then tied on a mini swivel. I then tied 4-5 ft of florocarbon line to the swivel with my hook. We'll see how that works. Seems that the mono would lose it's memory and coil out when comming out the reel.

Same here.  Fat head minnows on tip ups you will be chasing flags all day.  I have 2 tip ups rigged with a quick stike set up that i use just for pan fish.  Then I have the other 3 rigged for the big mama's. But it all depends on what you are going after.  When I head up to schroon i use all the tip ups for big fish and stick with the jigging sticks for panfish.

I've found if you are using fatheads on a tip up you should check them more often. I have done bait checks quite often and found a crappie on the line that did not trip the flag. I usually target the traps for pike, but if have my nephew with me or I drill a hole that is too weedy or shallow I'll drop one in with a fathead. My best crappie day last year was when the bait shop only had fatheads, so I set them that way. About half did not trip the flags, The perch always did.

Don`t call me crazy, but I spoll 100 yards of 27 lbs. tip up line. Then 12 feet of 6 lbs. mono leader. I`ve caught rainbows, salmon, lakers, and perch this way. It comes in handy when I want to set up on botton near Anthony`s nose on King George. 180 feet deep. Big Lakers.  ;D

so If I wanted to cover the panfish you guys would say run a crappie rig with fatheads on it and if I want tooth monsters like pike and walleye run like a 3ft leader of 50lb floro with a 4 or 5 inch gold shinner.
