Jig Tippers
« on: Dec 28, 2011, 07:51 PM »
Was just wondering what you all use to tip your jigs around the state.   I myself normally use mousies, but with the shortage this year was thinking about mail ordering euro larva. never seen anyone use them b4 so figured i might give'em a try.

I normally buy 500 - 1,000 wax worms in 250 count cups. soft and juicy, look like big fat spikes, just not as tuff. 1 waxie is equal to 3-6 spikes. I have been using them for years. Add some meal worms and you will have all the bait you need for the winter and some meal worms for trout in open water. I always stop and try to buy some kind of bait from the shops that are open in the winter just to keep them in business, some lures or a new rod, live bait as well when I use it. A mix on certain days will always help you get the fish when they want only one kind of bait.

I like the Mousies too, but if there's going to be a shortage of them you can always use a Perch eye from one of the keepers you get. They might even be somewhat more effective since they seem to be a little bit more robust and stay on longer.

Is there a shortage of mousies this year? Or do you mean bait shops aren't going to order as many due to the warm weather and not so cold forecasts?

I bought a bunch of containers(probably overpriced) in the beginning of the season last year from Dows. Might have to check out what I can get online.

last i heard is that they have no mousies period this year.  that the warm weather messed everything up.  all the websites i found that supply mousies all say the same thing.  One had on their site that something happened to their suppliers mousies and there will be none this year.

What's euro larva?

With the internet at your finger tips you'd think you would find your answer in less than 5 minutes.
Hey sax..........I guess the internet is good for something!

Hay All!!

I order all my bait on line, local bait shops never hve the bait and are always in limited quantities if they do, and don't give you a price break even if you buy by the thousands. "Everybody gotta get paid" :-\
Euro larva/spikes are maggots and I believe they are the bottle fly larva if I'm not mistaken. They come in various colors by dying them, and  including there natural color cream. I fish maggies exclusively for Gills,Perch (Yellow and WHITE) Crappie (Black and White) along with LMB, and trout. Haven't tried them for walleye but who knows you pack enough on to a frosty jig and it a meal.....LOL!!!
I have to admit I have never caught with regularity any of the above mentioned fish with mousies or waxies for that matter. Although I buy them every year I catch a few fish :-\ but not enough to buy them in
the thousands like i do with the maggies. ;D
As for ordering them I order my maggies (colored/euro larva) by the 5000 its cheeper that way, in December or in the cooler months shipping is less when its not threatning freezing temps (2-3 day shipping) then overnight when ordering in January.  I change the bedding when they arrive and leave them in the ziplock bag they came in, dont worry about them breathing they can, and stick them back in the box they came in an in to a cold fridge temp between 33-36 F. This puts them in slow mode, no feeding and keep them dry in (hardwood sawdust, pine will kill them) cus they respirate amonia. I have kept my maggots as long as 5 months but after that they all started to change so i fed them to the blue gills in a local pond.Hope this helps, have a Safe and Healthy New Year and be safe on the ice ;D

Places on the interwebs that i have bought bugs is a follows: (Most u can buy bulk and some by the hundreds, but choose for your self.)

  • Knutsonlivebait.com
    Grubco.com
    Wholesalebait.com
    forkedtreeranch.com
Vadosbait.com(these are the guys i buy from quick service, courteous and i get happy hardy fat healthy bugs....Ohhhhh yaaaaahhhhh!!!!

just looked at knutsons and the shipping was outrageous.  cost more then my order itself.  any other sites w/ lesser shipping charges?  or maybe a promo code for knutsons?

The colored maggots are not dyed. The stuff they eat is dyed and the maggots take on the color of the dye that was in their feed. Bee moth larva is the name I recall from the times people actually went to the trouble of getting into the details. There was also a recipe for raising your own wax worms floating around as well, a bit complicated and time consuming, BUT HEY, it's not like we don't have time on our hands.

This year I'm gonna buy mealies from teh pet store. while buying to feed my geckos, I found they have different sizes, from real small (less than 3/16") to large like the size we used to buying in bait shop.

When buying bait online, it pays to split an order 2-3-4 ways to cut the shipping price down. I never though I could use 500 meal worms in a winter, but kept cold and dark, they are still good for trout season, which may actually be a good fill in till we get some ice.

Koz / Galore - If you guys want to do a split on some online bait, PM me. I was thinking of placing an order. Short term I will be at Dow's.
