helena res.kokanee salmon question
« on: Jan 06, 2012, 05:56 PM »
went to helena res. today hoping to catch a salmon.there was plenty of ice,and it was so clear i could see them swimming under the ice.
It was a awsome sight to see them all around, but they wouldnt touch a thing. Any suggestions! tried a small jigg tipped with a grub, and a small dead salted shinner.

dynomite, but once you drop it down the hole you have to run like HE double toothpicks unless you swim well in a large margarita

I know guys do well every spring trolling, and I've done well during snagging season, but I don't know of anyone that ever pulls them through the ice...few years back there was a few perch in there too...

oldflatlander how was the ice out there? Safe? I used to fish out there and do well on both salmon and perch but the the fishing has really gone down hill out there the last 3 years. I dont know what the deal is but nobody really has much luck there anymore. Used to be fun the salmon would come through in schools and it was gun ho for a few and then wait till they came by again.

mackdog75.  The ice is about 9 to 10 inches thick. plenty thick. maybe you give it a try again.
I saw alot of salmon, one was as long as my arm and thats no fish story. would be cool if ya had an underwater camera.
may try again sunday. thanks for the info guys!

I was out there around Christmas and got four bites and one salmon.  Lots on the finder, both on the very bottom and right below the ice.  I'd like to give it a shot again to figure out what they would hit

We went up there on a whim, and I couldn't find any of my old stuff for Kokes.  When I was a kid all we used was blue and silver stuff.  Mostly little cleos and kastmasters.  All the stuff I got was way to big in my opinion but it's all I had.  I think I got them on blue and silver Krocadiles, but like I said they were way to big but I managed to get one.  I think I've been there three times and each time I get a salmon right of the bat, sit there all day and don't get another one.  I marked fish all day this time, but much much more picky than ever before.  In the past I might only mark one or two groups but I got nailed when they came through.  Good luck.
