Hey guys when shoreline fishing in open water for trout I usually have pretty good luck with the bait about 18 inches off  the bottom. When ice fishing should I set the bait at roughly the same depth? Also never caught a lake trout... what do you guys think works good for bait?

BUT the fish have problems digesting it so its illegal in a lot of waters. Also, i have the best luck between 1 and 2 feet off the bottom. Usually night crawlers or a small jig tipped with a meal worm.

fish and trouts rainbow and browns mainly have no problem digesting corn it all over in the scietific literature just a rumour started by fish and game too easy to catch trouts on corn
Whats do you drink on the ice? I like beer. any advise is greatly appreciated

Ok well whatever the case it's illegal in my body of water so at least check your regs.

Commission fisheries biologist Tom Bender at Benner Spring Fish Research Station conducted a study in 1992 that examined the impact of corn on trout. For the study, two groups of hatchery rainbow trout were held in separate tanks and tested for 54 days. In one tank, 20 rainbow trout (average size 8.3 inches) were fed a diet of whole kernel corn. In the second tank, 20 rainbow trout of the same size were fed a standard trout pellet diet.

During the 54 day study period, no mortalities occurred from trout of either study group. However, study results did show that the trout fed with a corn diet did not digest the corn particularly well. The growth observed by the corn-fed trout during the study period was only about half of that observed from the trout that were fed the standard trout pellet diet.

The conclusion from this study was that there appears to be little reason for concern about the short term health hazards for rainbow trout when whole kernel corn is used for bait. Although there are better diets for trout than whole kernel corn, this study confirms that mortality does not occur when trout ingest whole kernel corn.

Hi all,

When fishing for various trout species in one area {rainbows, brookies, browns}, do you jig or prefer to keep the bait still with set rods or tip-ups?

What depth do you usually jig or fish at, near the bottom, half way up or just under the ice, or all 3 depths? ???

If you can have 5 traps I would use 4 tip-ups and jig in one hole. For brook trout in shallow water set up just below the ice and when fishing 10+ fow I usually set up about halfway down.
Some people say that if you've caught one fish you've caught them all. I say that if you've caught one fish, you want to catch them all!

Thanks for the info Mainefish9. :)

Here in Sask. we are allowed only 2 lines on the ice.
I will try jigging with one and have the other as a set rod. I will also try just under the ice if I am in the shallows.

i have heard it can cause some problems with chumming, they eat so much of it they dont eat anything else. chumming in maine is a big no no so we dont have much of a problem up here, but corn is legal bait. i go with half a crawler on my traps
a bad day of fishin beats a good day workin!

Brookies like it shallow and on sandy/gravel bottoms.  Caught a bunch the other day and the deepest was 3'.  I was using shiners/dace/fatheads.  If is real shallow say 1' under the ice then I put the bait right under the ice.  At the 3' the other day I had it at 18".   My deepest trap I sat that day was 8' and I set my bait about  18" off the bottom.  Lakers love a good Sucker!!  Smash it up alittle bit to get some scent in the water,  Large Chubs work great to.  Cutting some gashes in the sides, clipping the tails seems to work good to..
