Night fishing?
« on: Jan 24, 2012, 09:44 PM »
So at around 4pm the flasher lights up and the bite is non stop. Then a little after full darkness has set in, the flasher is still lit up and the fish don't seem to want to bite. This has happended to me a few times this year and I wondered if you had any thoughts or suggestions. I try everything at that point and can't seem to get them to commit, they follow it up and down but won't take it. Oh and I'm fishing for panfish by the way.

Thanks guys!!!

lots of guys go out and target crappie at night google it you will find lots of tips I'm not much into panfishing

Walleye are also night feeders most guys will try to go out for the morning and night bite right before the sun comes up and right after it goes down although im sure you can get them all night

those are the 2 species that standout pike are definitely daytime feeders as they primarily use sight to find there food and from what Ive read perch are not much for night feeding despite the fact that they are closely related to the walleye

I would recommend grabbing some glow lures this help you attract fish at night

That is when I would put on half a minnow and constantly wiggle the teardrop jig. This is what seems to work for me when they turn off like that.

My favorite day of ice fishing starts around 1-2pm. I drill many holes right off the bat & proceed to fish perch/Blue gills and pike. Around 5-5:30pm the lantren and charge light come out for the night time crappie bite. I really only target Crappie at night because I catch more then. Green teardrop sugar coated glow jigs tipped with 2-3 maggots is my go to. This year we have got  tons of Blue Gills at night while Crappie fishing & even a few big perch and lots of monster rocko's!

Never caught one but from what I have read night time is the best time for them

That's what I found so far this year. The bluegills go mental right at dark as the crappie come on. But  maybe it was just a strange few nights, because when I watch videos on youtube, people seem to be doing the same thins as me. However, my luck has not been the same.  >:(  I'll keep trying though!!

Thanks guys!!

As for the Burbot. A few friends were up on Nipissing last year in one of those bungalows on the ice and they were telling me that at around 3 in the morning they ended up catching like 8 of them. But that's all I know about them.

I've pulled a lot of all-nighters for walleye, and twice for crappie. The crappie was one Little Lake right in Barrie, never really fished for crappie before, just got a tip from an old timer at the bait shop..

Killed them on a bare glow teardrop, sort of a perch pattern with glow on the hook side..  Beginners luck maybe??

So my night fishing problems seem to have sorted themselves out with some great nights with the Crappie. I was out on Rice lake last Saturday night fishing and caught six cat fish in the span of an hour or so. They were all around the 2lb mark or just a bit more and lots of fun on my ultra light Crappie/Perch set up!! (First cats through the ice for me too)  They sure are ugly looking with the odd one having some kind of growth on the mouth. I was just wondering if they are any good to eat? I mean I have had cat fish before but kind of assumed it was a different kind.

thanks,
John

Its awesome your onto the Crappie night bite in most area's you can have the ice to yourself!! I caught 2 bullheads through the ice this year while night crapping would think this would be the best time to eat them.....not sure though!
