Eating them?
« on: Oct 31, 2012, 07:05 PM »
Ok I've went thru most of the pages, I have never eaten crappie, how are they compared to say perch or walleye, do you cook them the same? I have a bud that says he will eat hard water crappie the flesh is firm, but soft water they are mushy. just asking I catch a few of them but allways put them back.

I can cook perch, walleye and crappie all the same and if the fillets are cut to the same size, nobody can tell the difference. You cannot go wrong with beer battered crappie.

That shocks me you haven't had it yet. The way we usually cook our crappie is by eggwashing them and crumbling up ritz crackerS till theyre almost powder. Lots of butter and whatever seasoning you like. Salt and pepper is usually all it needs but a little dash of cajun is always nice!

They do get mushy in the warmer months. Just bag and freeze them to eat later to solve this problem. I agree 100% with the other poster that mentioned using ritz crackers crumbled up! Waaaaay better this way! Anymore I just mix in the crackers with some regular flour and then add seasoning. If I have too much flour/cracker mix leftover, I throw it in the freezer to use later.

I used to bread everything with crackers, switched to panko, and ill never look back, give it a shot. Im pretty sure you could panko fry a dog turd and people would eat it!

Crappies are delicious.  I make them in beer batter just like walleye, perch or gills.  Many ways to fix them depending on your taste and preference.

I am sort of surprized also, my dad always had us eat what we caught, never recall catching more so eating crappie. wouldn't even know why. dad was quite the avid outdoorsman, if you could eat it dad could get it.

I always enjoy eating ( and catching) winter crappie, but like the taste of perch and gills a little more. My favorite is egg washed and dipped in a mix of seasoned breadcrumbs and Panko type for a little crunch. A little grated parm in the crumbs won't hurt. Some peanut oil in the skillet and stand by with cold beverage and maybe a little tartar sauce. Now I'm starting to get hungry!
