I agree with what Robbi said...no need to insult the man.  It was a mistake and if he honestly knew it was wrong than he would not have posted it.  People need to lighten up a bit.

Some of us read the regs and follow them, dont try to lump the rest of us in with those of you who play the ignorance card, its no excuse.Admitting it on an internet forum where the MT f&G is present though... PRICELESS.
Probably rainbow trout minnows, its doesn't say in CF regs you cant use them right?

Fished the silos after a slow start (girlfriend wanted to come but run all around town beforehand) today from about 10:30 to 3:30.  It was absolutely dead.  We didn't even see a fish on the Vex.  Tried ranges from 6' all the way up to about 30'.  Was planning on going tomorrow too, but I might just stay home with action being the way it is.

First time fishing the lake, was told by a friend to pick up minnows and use em there. And I recall looking in the regs book while we were in the camper and didn't see anything about live bait. Sorry guys, lesson learned I guess. Thanks for letting me know but I don't appreciate all of the insults.

You really ought to tuck tail on this one man. Yes, we've all made mistakes. But using live minnows where not allowed, that's not exactly a minor infraction. I hope you study up on the regs before your next trip.

Fished south of the silos today from 10:30 to around 2. Caught 3 big rainbows between 4 and 6 pounds and missed 3 others. The bite was really good for the first hou then it just shut off with not even a single bite for the rest of the day. still really slow.

I know using live bait is against the regulations, but why?..Why cant there be a local trapper taking minnows out of Canyon Ferry or the Missouri that we can buy minnows from...what harm would that cause? You can use live bait in many other Montana Missouri river tributaries.....anyway s I was fishing Duck creek today...6 inches of ice and pressure ridges everywhere..caught 4 rainbows and 1 nice brown..no perch!...these perch have to eat sometime.

I fished near the silos this morning. This time I tried a live muskrat. Damn thing kept crawling out of the hole. Finally I tied a downrigger weight to its leg to keep it down. That helped a lot. Got one big pike in 18 FOW, prolly 27 pounds, but lost him at the hole. Couldn't find another muskrat so called it a day.

I'm w/ NONYA. Some of us spend the time to know the regulations inside and out, so that we can be legal in our fishing.  Just because most people are to lazy to take the time to figure out rules, does not make it an excuse.  If you are going to be a "sportsman" learn the rules of the sport.

Sometimes the most obvious things are the easiest to miss, especially when you go to a new place. I think it is time to give the guy a break.

I agree with both statements.  Especially "the most obvious things are the easiest to miss".    Last week a couple of us went to Wadsworth for a few hours to check equipment and fish a little.  Now mind you, I'm the dude that is the regulation nut.  Out of everyone I hunt and fish with, I'm the one that scours the regs and knows what's what.   My fiance' always ribs me because I will speed, drive without a renewed license, refuse to get insurance but I will never break a hunting/fishing regulation.  Nothing in my mind says it's worth it to lose your privileges for a couple years.  Anyway.........out at Wadsworth and I'm drilling holes with my new auger and the others are fishing.  When I started fishing there were many holes so I started setting up.  When I got my third pole in the water the guy with me says.....I think it's two poles only.  Here I thought that through the ice was six like so many of the places we fish.  (My first ever trip to Wadsworth).  So I got the third rod up right away, but the point is.......I thought I knew so why would I check?  It happens.  Am I stupid?  Maybe in the eyes of some of the Holier than Thou crowd, but most that know me realize I'm human and therefore susceptible to error.

Let's all just fish!!  We're a diminishing breed in this country and fighting amongst ourselves is not productive.  However, a willful violation should be reported to 1-800-TIP-MONT

You're right Robbi & FWB, I agree we have let him know enough that he shouldn't make the same mistake again. It doesn't sound like it was an intentional violation, though it was stupid. I think the reason alot of us took it to heart (the ones who fish this drainage)- every one of us wishes we could fish with live minnows and how great that would be, but we know the rules and don't.

and badfish- I absolutely agree with you on that! I've thought for years we should take Wyoming's lead on this, and legalize certified minnows for use in the drainage they were captured. No dreaded "illegal introductions", fishing with a native/present bait. Our problem is that FWP works for themselves, not the people like they should. They have an insane amount of rules that were made for the exception, not the norm.

Fished south of the silos today from dawn till 3. Very slow, iced three nice rainbows, not much of a bite all day. Ice was 6" with a big pressure ridge 200 yards off shore.

The certified minnows would be a great idea.  Wyoming has a top notch F&G.  The wyoming board has a thread where people can post questions for fish and game.  It's a really interesting idea, to get info from the people who really have the scoop.

Hey Teters, I too used to use baby ducks with some success. But, for my money- the belly meat off of spotted owls is a way better deal because you can catch two or three fish without having to rebait! As far as the electro-shocking, it's ok, but shape charges are a much more consitent bite when fishing gets tough. Just saying...... ;D

Live goldfish strung in a daisy chain fashion on a paddlefish snagging rig(8 foot steel leader) tipped with tiny pike fry(live) in a ziplock baggie with holes poked in it to keep them active, when you see perch approach on the underwater camera(I like to use 4 in a semi circular configuration) jerk upwards in a violent fashion to set one of the hooks in the perch.Remember to dump 8-10 tubes of maggots and a can of corn down your hole before you lower the jig in order to enhance its effectiveness.  NOTE: bring plenty of pike fry since the hook setting motion will often tear the baggie releasing the fry. ::)
OR a hammered spoon with a 8" dropper (green glow hook) tipped with maggots and perch eyes.

Based on NONYA'S previous post in another thread I would say the offender was just trying to follow NONYA'S advice on how to catch fish.
