Cats are dormant in the winter, for the most part.  Check this out:

I get them in NH during the day a lot, last year I went out at night and targeted them and all I got was cold!

LOL!!  Just the big ones, I guess, like that one!!  Nice to be able to pull them up sideways through an 8 inch hole.  Good pics!!

I have even gotten them jigging at night, they love glow in the dark jigs. The Crappy would be hooked in the mouth (taking the Maggies on the hook) and the Hornpout would be hooked under the chin, trying to eat the glow jig... It has a loooong time ago, but we would set up tilts at night with night crawlers and get them also. We also often get them during the day on tilts.

A guy in the next tent over from me at EOM last week caught a big cat. I was in about 25 feet. Don't know what he caught it on, but pretty sure he wasn't targeting them.

heres on i caught back in 09
caught it completely by accident on the red river
reeling up a nod to change tackle got a bite on another rod missed that one and this big guy picked up my jig 10 feet off the bottom
could barely get him through an 8" hole after a 10 min fight on a light rod and 4 pound test

we catch quite a few but more so in certain spots in the lake. they dont go on a diet in the winter. find the right places and catch them on a regular basis.
