Grubby Fish
« on: Dec 18, 2011, 04:10 PM »
Last year, about half the fish I pulled out of Pushaw had grubs in them. The IFW maintains that the fish are still fine to eat, but I didn't try it. Has anyone else run into this?

Do you mean the worms in Yellow perch? If so...I see few, to none, during ice fishing, but during warm weather the same body of water will have very wormy fish. That being said, I am not familiar with fishing Pushaw. I have also heard they will not bother you, nor will you taste them. :)
I fish.

It's the little white or yellow grubs that burrow into the fish through their skin. I saw quite a few in yellow perch and also in many of the pickerel. Some of the fish were still bleeding from the spots where the parasites ate their way in.

Ever seen a cod worm you can freeze them for weeks or months and when you thaw them they will still be alive and they also show up real good in the meat after frozen pretty sick if you ask me

Cook the fish well and there aren't any issues.

A cooked worm is a dead worm. Even though most of the parasites that the fish host don't have a lifecycle compatible with humans, I still don't eat freshwater fish raw, but I have yet to decide to not eat a fish because it was "wormy"
