Cleats for white mickey boots?
« on: Nov 13, 2011, 01:24 AM »
Ive got the army issue white mickey mouse boots. My tread on them is getting down there a little and I was slippin and slidin a little last year. Went and looke at new ones yesterday and notice they all seem to be kinda slim on the tread anyway. Anyone know what cleats work well on the white mickey's? Im a size 10r in mickey's so they arent super huge but definitely bigger than most boots.

I have mickey`s also. I use a simple cleat, it`s one piece of square metal with the corners bent down. Thru that is a strap that buckels on top of your boot. Also is a strap attached to that one that goes around the back of your foot, about ankle hight.  I don`t know who makes them but I believe Gander Mountain is where I got them, it`s an old design but works good  & they fit mickey`s.  Mine are probably 18 yrs. old & got lots of ice time. The straps are black, the metal is unfinished. The cleat sit`s right in front of the heel on the boot.

BIG cleats!  I have size 10 Bunnies and XL Stabilicers only go on with a lot of coaxing.  They come off pretty often too.  XXL or even XXXL (if they make them). I may end up buying a pair of cleats and using Shoe goo to attach them

search for "screwing your boots" in the forums.  I'm thinking about just doing that with mine this year.

I would be cautious about screwing into your Mickey boots.  As you are probably aware there is trapped air inside which is why these things are so awesome to begin with.  I would be afraid screwing into the bottom would puncture the air pocket and destroy the insulation properties.

For me, I just checked and my XL Stabilicers will work but need to be modified.  First the front toe strap needs to be put in the far back position, this doesn't require any modification.  However, my back straps will not fit over the back of my Bunny boots.  There is a rubber heel plate to assist in getting the boots off that gets in the way.  I am going to remove the stitching from the heel strap and sew it further up the straps, this will allow it to clear the rubber piece and secure the cleats firmly. This should fix my issue of them coming off.  Hope this helps.

I'm a size 12 in my black Mickies.  I picked up the basic rubber style cleat that stretches over.  I think HT makes them.  It works well for me.  I had no problem getting them on or off.

Im gonna second Ramp23. I wear a pair of 13xw mickey's and this is the most stable and easy on and off cleat ive come across. I had a owned a pair of boots once that already had screws in them and wouldn't recomend doing that. I've heard the largest size of Yaks Traks will fit them but have not gotten a pair to try yet. Here is a pic of the cleat if anyone is confused about the one Ramp and I are talking about.

Very inexpensive and keeps me on my feet.

I bought a pair of Mickeys last season and I love them. The cheapo HT slip on cleats, with the rows of teeth on the front (i think they cost about 8 bucks) were the only ones that fit for me.  I initially bought the stabilicers and they constantly slipped off.  I left the ht's attached all winter and they worked great.  When I just went down and broke out all of my gear, I noticed that the pair of HT's that i left on my boots had cracked over the summer...No worries, another 8 bucks and a fresh pair for this season. Cheers!

I've got a pair of Stabilicers that I wouldn't trade for any other creepers. I've used them on my snowmoble boots before, which are HUGE, almost like the mickey boots. I can't imagine they wouldn't do the trick.

Size 10 Bunnies

Make sure toe loop is in the farthest loop so the strap covers more of the toe

Cut original threads securing the two back straps and re-attach further up so it crosss above the heal pad and new angle (green thread is 20# Spiderwire)

This took maybe half an hour

Anyone have a recommendation for a pair of cleats for my new size 10 white mickeys?  Preferably something I don't have to modify....and cheaper than kahtoolas ....

I posted on a different post that I purchased a cheap pair from walmart. They are ht brand. 8 bucks. Im not sure how they will hold up since i have no flipping ice yet, but they are a perfect fit on my size 10 bunnies. Just a stretch over fit design. Rubber with metal cleats molded in. You need the xl pac boot size. Ht also makes a higher quality pair I found at gander mtn, but they were really heavy. Good luck

X2 A friend of mine has the golf shoe soles with spikes that are about 3/4" long. they work really well.

They sell the yaktrax in the store at dicks sporting goods. Might go check them out if have a dicks near you. They were a very tight fit on my buddies NON mickey boots. He wears size 12 though. Didnt have my mickeys with so dont know if theyd fit well or not. If so, itd be a real tight fit I think.

The cheap HT's at walmart are a great fit and I like the design. Someone else posted they fell apart after one ice season. But at 8 bucks cant go wrong really.

As long as they are comfortable...i'm Ok with spending more for cleats as long as they don't make my foot ache.  I had those HT cheapies a long time ago and they made my arch hurt so bad....  I may try them again to see how they do with these boots.

I've been using arctic spurs for a few years and like them but mine are falling apart.

Another consideration is will the cleats tear up my new boots....I've had cleats in the past that cut into rubber boots on the sides...not cool... Dont' want that to happen to my new mickeys.

A little more expensive than I'd like, but I'll probably get a set of these after Christmas - they look just wicked, almost like a hybrid between a set of rigid crampons and the microspikes.
