2 Transducers, 1 Vex?
« on: Nov 21, 2013, 04:31 PM »
I happened to notice that Vexilar offers a "switch box"  on their website, which is designed to run 2 transducers from the same flasher.  You would simply flip a switch to go from one transducer to the other.  They are apparently offered with boats in mind, but would also work for ice fishing.  The idea is that you could be in your shanty with your main transducer and "switch" to a second transducer in a hole some distance away (transducer extension cables would be needed).  Has anyone tried this?  Is it a dumb idea?  I have two transducers, so I would need to buy the switch box ($40) and at least one extension cable.

I think they are referring to a dual beam transducer. Meaning that it can be 9 degree and flip the switch and then be 19degree.  Not exactly sure or the degrees but you get the point.

yes it is for two ducers but was ment to be used back before the days of dual or tri-beam ducers. used to be if you wanted to switch cone angles you had to swap ducers or use this switch

I was on a bus and just happened to be sitting on a news paper. This guy came up and asked. "Are you reading that ?"
I said  yes, stood up, turned the page and sat back down.

I actually talked to a guy at Vexilar and he said it is designed for boats where you would have one ducer in the front and one in the back.  I was just thinking it might be helpful at times to watch 2 holes that were say 20' apart at the same time without moving the vex.

I have an old Humminbird that I rigged for my canoe. Before the days of dual transducers. I had two different Cone Angles. One wide angle for coverage, then switched to a narrow beam for precision. I'd dig it out but I have a 385ci.
But I can see one transducer for for location and a second on the trolling motor for pinpoint fishing. Or as you said, two different holes 20 ft apart.
The switch, by the way, worked great.

There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the ice looking like an idiot.
