NW Iowa Ice Fishing- (Orange City Area)
« on: Dec 15, 2011, 03:59 PM »
I just moved up to Northwest Iowa (Orange City Area) this summer and this is my first ice fishing season up here. I am currently trying to find some local ice fishing spots. I know the IGL's aren't too far away but was looking for something closer such as small lakes or farm ponds. Is anybody willing to share some spots? I went to the little pond by Alton today and measured 3.5 to 4 inches of ice. Is there any fish in there?

Not sure about anything down there. I usually fish the IGL and would like to find something when I head back to class in Sheldon in early Jan so I can just head there after class when I don't have to work. So I will ask a few buddies and see if they know anything close to that area. Welcome aboard!

I've caught some crappies, bass, and blue gill out of the ponds by alton. Only fished them two or three times. I think about 3-4 years ago those ponds had a winterkill occur. Ya just never know for sure if there is a lot of fish or what kind of fish is in them since the floyd floods them every couple of years or so. Could be some good size crappie if you could find them in there.

I think there might be some gravel pits down by carnes, and then there is the larger pond south of sioux center on the hwy. Not sure if it is private or public with the housing complex there.

If you don't mind driving a few miles, there is mill creek in paullina and they've got some fairly good panfish like crappies & gills in it if you can find them. Mill Creek was drained and restocked about 5 years ago, so the panfish are starting to get to eating size.

I'm from the Orange City area as well.  I like Carnes personally, we have never had any trouble catching fish there.  Sandy hallow in Sioux Center will get you some fish as well.

Every plastics manufacturer claims plastics outfish livebait. So now I use livebait just for the increased challenge.
