Advice in Putnam County
« on: Dec 14, 2011, 07:24 PM »
I'll be spending some time in the Peekskill area this winter and I'll have some free time to do some ice fishing. Does anyone have any information/advice on what lakes to check out.
Where to park, what species of fish, local bait stores, what I'll need(I've got the basics) etc. ???
I was looking at White Pond, West Branch Res, Gilead, and Glenida. I've looked on the reports and conditions pages already but there's nothin there.
I'd appreciate the help. Thanks in advance

fished most of those places open water, my wifes family lives down there.  Take a drive by them and you'll see where you can park, its pretty much on the road. use the search option and type in the lake name and youll find some pics of nice fish and who fishes those bodies of water, then u can simply pm them for info and hope they let u in on what they know!  ;D

White Pond Freezes up First because it is shallow.  You can have fun chasing flags... Largemouth Bass, Pickerel, and Perch and if you're lucky you might catch a Northern Pike or Walleye that were stocked in there years ago.

The Reservoirs take longer to freeze over.  The last 2 years were good ice wise.  What also hurts is if it's windy, this prevents the larger bodies of water from freezing as well.  Remember to get your Free DEP Access Permit for the Reservoirs if you don't have it already.

Both Gil;ead & Gleneida are deep lakes with Trout & Lakers in them, but, they don't freeze up every year.  Same deal with the reservoirs....very deep, last to freeze.  I've heard of some smaller ponds in the Peekskill area but haven''t fished them myself.
A little bit North you will find Sylvan Lake (near Hopewell Jct.).....also deep water, but productive fishing.

There's a bait shop near Somers, NY ...Bob's Bait at intersection of Route 100 & Route 35.... great people there (see John or Lucy) with reliable information.

Good Luck.
