Jigging Rod power assessment.
« on: Dec 15, 2011, 08:14 AM »
Just going off the feel of the rod's flex power.  I've kind of assessed some of my arsenal of rods from lightest to strongest.  The longer rods tend to have more forgiveness so they do have a slightly softer feel.  That length is really assessed from rod blank from foregrip to tip.

As much as I like my Thorne Bros rods, they do come with an higher cost.  So I cannot afford a wider assortment of TB rods.  For the St. Croix rods, I hate the idea of having stainless steel inserts for line guides.  However they do provide a lightness in feel along with their porprietary reel seat.  The Shakespeare Ugly Lite ice are kind of heavy in feel as a rod due to the twist lock reel seat, but they load up decent for the most part.  Anyway due to the fall rate of various spoons and jig shapes are affected throught the water column, sometimes it's better to use a different rod for the best feel.  Not all manufacture labelled rating will fall in the same power rating.

Shakespeare Cajun Ice 25" UL
St. Croix Premier 28" UL
St. Croix Premier 24" UL
Shakespeare Fuel Ice 27" L
St. Croix Premier 36" L
Shakespeare Ugly Lite ice 26" UL
St. Croix Premier 28" ML
Thorne Bros Panfish Sweatheart 32"
Thorne Bros Perch Sweetheart 32"
Shakespeare Ugly Lite ice 26" L
Jason Mitchell 38" Ice Special (spinning Laker/Mackinaw)
Shakespeare Ugly Lite ice 27" M
Thorne Bros Walleye Sweetheart 32"
St. Croix Premier 36" M
St. Croix Premier 28" M

How do you rate your jigging rods power?

I guess my definition of the rods action/power is a little off from what the rod says it is. Some say light, but they arent what Id define "light" and visa-versa.

24" HT Ice Blue L - Says its a light, but its got UL feel to me throughout the entire blank.
26" HT Cysco UL - Just a hair slower/stiffer than the Ice Blue. Very very close though.
25" Fenwick Elite UL - Just a hair slower/stiffer than the Cysco. Perfect flex throughout.
27" HT Polar Lite L/M - This rod must be considered a deadstick, because its got the lightest tip Ive ever felt but gets real stiff after the 2nd eye down. The tip lessens my power rating of it overall.
18" HT Shanty Stix L - Surprisingly limber throughout, but meaty enough to easily land a bass Id guess.
27" South Bend Alpine L - This is what a L should feel like to me. Decent flex all the way to the last eye, but meaty enough to turn a fish if needed.
25" Berkley Hot Ice M - This is what a M/L should feel like to me. Decent flex throughout but slightly slower tip, could play a fish rough & tumble.
26" Frabill Amplifier L - Not what Id call a L. Slow throughout with little flex, could stop a fish dead..
28" HT Arctic Bay QX L - Not what Id call a L. Slow throughout with little flex, muscle em in rod.
27" Rhino Indestructable M - No way Id call this a M, very stiff and slow. Broomstick.
