I will be attending college at Northern Michigan University (naturally pursuing a degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Management) next year, and I was wondering how the ice fishing is in the UP?  I am from a small town just north of the Ohio Border, and I was wondering how the ice fishing compared on the polar opposite of the state?  Down here I know the season is a bit shorter, but some of the local lakes around have some EXCELLENT panfish opportunities that will be hard to give up... :-\

I may sound Naieve, but are there equal opportunites for panfish in the UP?  I prefer panfish, but if needed...I will target other species.  Ice fishing is my life come winter time, so I guarantee I will be on the ice no matter what the fishing is like.

Thank you all,

There are some good lakes around here for panfish. I don't know of any close to marquette. Gwinn has some real good panfishing. there are some over here Republic way but that is a pretty good trip from Mqt. Just watch on here we will be posting around Christmas time (hope) and if you go by a lake with people on it stop and walk out. People are friendly and will talk. If you dont have one yet. Buy a gas auger. It is not uncommon to get 40+ inches of ice up here. Good luck and enjoy the U.P.  Steve

  • Can't get enough of the hardwater
As previously stated gwinn would be a good place to start if you're looking for panfish. Good luck, there are lots of great places to fish but it just takes some time to figure the area out
