New to the area, just wanted to say hello.
« on: Nov 30, 2011, 11:17 AM »
Hello everyone,
I am originally from Maine, and joined IS last year after I got stationed in VA BCH, and was jonesin for some ice action. Didnt fish anywhere last year cause all my gear was in Maine. This year I want to make at least a half dozen outings I HOPE. From what I see Deep Creek is only about 4 and a half hrs away and I could make that trip every weekend if the fishing is good. Any other lakes in the area that are worth trying? Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated. Anyway just wanted to say hi and tell a little about myself and looking forward to some harwater action this winter! ;D

jtlambo, I'm thinking I am about 6 hours from Virginia Beach and Deep Creek Lake is 50 or so minutes from me. I think you will be a little closer to 7 hours from Deep Creek. There is ice to be had closer to you then Deep Creek. I just appears a little later and sometimes not at all. We catch mostly yellow perch at Deep Creek and occasionally a walleye. There is northern pike also, but you don't catch many. The wurst thing about ice fishing Deep Creek  is getting a place to park. The only guaranteed place is at the state park. Since you are from Maine, I assume you like to trout fish. West Virginia started their trout stocking program this week. You can find the trout stocking schedule online at wvdnr.gov. It does not tell you the day they will stock but will tell you after they already stocked. The stocking hotline # is 1-304-558-3399. If you private message me I can keep you updated on the current ice conditions. I could possibly take you ice fishing if possible. You can get good information on fishing Deep Creek at fishdeepcreek.com then go to message board. There are good guys on there posting about the fishing.
Ice fishing is no catch and release sport.
