I bought a bag of the thickest rubber bands they had at Staples and have held up for 2 years but it's getting time to replace them.

I have a roll of velcro used to hold tomato plants on stakes, think I'll give it a try but not sure if the velcro is tough enough.

X2 on the ponytail elastics and one of my traps also has the cork circle which is great and also small drilled holes on the outer part of the reel may work also.

A local produce department might give you a few feet of velcro, they use it to wrap lettuce and celery.
