Finally got the wood stove I've been wanting!
« on: Aug 27, 2011, 09:51 AM »
I've been wanting a wood stove in my shack for a number of years now for multiple reasons.  My first shack had a propane heater and the second shack was too small.  The shack I built with my Brother in law last winter is just right as we didn't put in a heater, we had intentions of using my Big Buddy heater every time.  Just for kicks the other day I was browsing craigslist and found an Uncle Josh wood stove for $25, brand new in the box.  All I need now is to find 3" ventilation pipes and I'm good to go!  I already bought some flashing to put in the shack when we built it, I knew someday it would get used.  We don't sleep in this shack and I have asked questions and researched what I need to know, and I can't wait!  I love how every summer about this time I buy something new for the fish house or make a modification.

One I made several years ago.  Still waiting for me to build a shack to put it in.

It's about the same size as the Nu Way stove.  I bought the Nu Way stove pipe kit for it, fits good.  Here's a question I have though.  Do I need to apply any high temp silicone or anything to the sections where they meet?  They fit tight but I want to be sure.  I have a 3" vent in the side of my house, plus the two windows will be cracked open.  Like I said, we don't sleep in there and we are in and out frequently dealing with tip ups.

I just screwed my nu-way pipe sections together.  That stuff is galvanized right?  Burn it hot a few times with all
windows and doors open.  The gas put off by that stuff will kill you.

You should be good to go Jason, here in the east, some codes calls for 3 self tapping screw equally spaced around the pipe joint ! Some stoves need furnace cement to seal the pipe to the stove collar if it is a loose [you can move it easily by hand] fit, if not, you should be good to go, no sealant required ! Good luck and can you post a photo after you get it installed ?

I'll screw them together, that's a good idea.  I plan on burning in it right after we install it, the manual on the stove also says to do so because of the fumes.  I probably won't get it installed until October, we are moving pretty quick and I'll have plenty of time then to once again play with my toys.  I like pictures just as much as you guys do, so I'll be sure to get a few during the install as well.

Just curious Jason, is the firebox lined with brick in your stove ?

Surf, the stove is not lined with brick.  It is single layer 20 gauge steel.

I had one similar and Nuked it in 2 seasons, the next one I lined and got 4,5 years out of it. it was still going strong when I sold the shack ! Just an observation.

How large and what type of bricks did you line yours with?  The fire box isn't very large to begin with, it can hold 14" long logs however.  I would want it to last, especially since I spent so much on it  ;D!  But really, it would be nice to get more than two years from it if that may be the case.

I didn't insulate my shack till the year before I sold it, so I had the stove cranked a lot ! I used the 1"thick x3"wide x 6" long. I put some sand in the bottom and just leaned them up against the sides. It definated helped the stove to throw more heat longer too !
