Smelt Camps in Maine
« on: Sep 05, 2011, 08:41 PM »
Possibly looking to go to one of the smelt camps this winter does anyone have an advice or input or a story you could share about your time in a smelt camp. I would be traveling in about 5 hours so also wondering how many days I should try to spend and the costs associated with the camps. Thanks gang and I know this is painfully early to be asking but what else is their to do. Ha

this link will get you started,  the prices may change before the start of the season, some camps are better than others,  some days/tides are better than others depending on the camp the weather and the whim of nature.  I personally like Leightions,  James Eddy and Bakers for good fishing and would stay away from Jims.  I have also found that early season is the best fishing.

I had a great experience at Baker's, despite the rain and slowness. Good service and fair prices.
I've got the itch... No, not that one. It's the good kind.
It's pronounced "fay-len" (the x's are silent)

Last year was my first year smelting, and we went to Baker's and Worthing's.  I recommend Baker's over Worthing's if you bring kids or want to fish without too much drunken disturbance.  By the end of the tide at Worthing's there was a group of drunk people who could barely stand...swearing at each other, throwing benches and they couldn't walk so they were constantly bumping into the shacks.  Baker's was very quiet, although we did go on a stormy day so there probably weren't as many people either...but it is the general consensus that Baker's is a more family-friendly place.  Fishing was about the same at both...we did well.
