Hi all I need help keeping my 3ft long hand tied leaders and hooks from getting all tangled up while I'm on the ice and storing them. I like to tie up a whole bunch before I go out but it always turns into a mess. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

They are seperate. its just a hook with 3 ft of mono tied to it. I attach them to my tip ups as needed but it always turns into a hassle because the leaders tangle. Just need a way to keep them seperate until I need them.

Thanks.

Have you tried small tupperware containers. Placing a leader in each one. Or get a piece of styrofoam, place the hook into the foam, then wrap the leader around the foam and secure with a rubber band.

I use the large size leader tamer, basically a cylinder with foam covering, hollow inside for some hook, splitshot, swivel storage. I like the larger size for less line memory. take a look at http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/leader-storage/

or

take one of your kids swim noodles, cut of a couple of 8 - 10" sections and use those. cut some slits to hold the loop end. works good and cheap.

^ That's what I do....pool noodle.
Also, I use golf tees to hold the loop end after I wrap the leader around the noodle.
If you ever get hit with a bucket of fish, be sure to close your eyes. ;)

Zip top sandwich bags work ok, don't take up much room either.

Here's what I use:

and I also use the small one,

I like the larger one, because you can get the plastic containers that fit inside.

They're called Tackle Tamers or Leader Tamers.   It sure is nice to have a bunch of pre-tied leaders ready to go when you're out on the ice.

Hope this helps,

I take a 1/4 to 3/8 inch thick piece of wood and cut it to a foot or so,and 1 1/2 inch wide.so it would be 12" long x1 1/2"wide x 1/4 to 3/8 thick now cut a v in each end to wrap the line in and a thin cut on the side to hook your first leader into then just put the hook through the loop and wrap it on and secure it with a rubber band.use a razor blade to make the outside cut where you hook the loop end of the leader on.my gradfather used these for his leaders and Im just following in his footsteps they work good to

I tie up alot of leaders, trout, bass, pike, all so I can make a quick change or I need a new leader on my tip up. The leader holders work great, but are to bulky for me. I use small zip lock bags about 2x3 inch's, most of the time one per bag. I wright what is in them on the bag (no cold finger knots). Has worked for me for years...

Just today I used the Seal-a-Meal to make up some leader holders. Took 'Snack' sized zip-locs and divided them into 3rds. Gives ya about a 1 1/2" by 2" baggie, just the perfect size for my leaders. I have an older seal-a-meal that still heats and seals just fine that i keep around for just this type of thing! I do hold the lid down a little longer because of heating and melting through the heavier 'loc' part of the baggies.

Also, you can go to just about any craft store, (or for us manly men have the better half go!), and get small zip-locs in different sizes for holding beads and things.

Just a few ideas to help ya out!!!

I like to use the 4 mil reclosable bags.  It keeps each leader nicely separated.  Plus the hooks won't poke through, like what happens with other bags.

I cut a length from foam pipe insulation.  It has a slice down the length of it in which you can tuck the end of your leader.  Then just wrap the leader around the foam and when you get to the end, pull it a little tight and stick the hook into the foam.  Works great and a 6 inch length of the insulation will hold 4 or 5 leader sections.

I use common pins with the colored plastic beads, a lot smaller then tee, can set then closer together.

I use a zip loc bag with index cards separating each leader.  I can fit several into each bag.  It will save space and time.  I wrap the leader into a coil and store it like a fly line tippet.  Write on the bag line test and hook size/make, as I tie several different rigs.

take a ceder shim (all i had around me) and semi carve it into the shape of a fish lol no more than 5 inches long.

where the end of the tail is put a slit for the snap end. wrap line around skinny part of shim. then put hooks/blades ect towards the front.

stores nice in tackle box and dont take up alot of room. no worries on tangles.

Hi Expansion Crack !!   The neatest and "coolest" way to keep leaders separate......You know those CD cases they sell with "pages" inside to hold the CD's???  They make the simplest and most convenient way to store and carry those leaders.   I sometimes tie up a leader with a jig on the end instead of a hook.  Make up a bunch with different jigs, and you won't have to try tying on a jig when your fingers are frozen....... just turn to the page you want , and "Bingo!!" jig & leder, ready to go!!

I have been making several leaders with a barrel swivel on one end and my jig on the other. To keep them from getting tangled up I cut up thin cardboard from cereal box into a 2" x 3" square. cut a V into each of the long ends and a slit it one V. Put the barrel swivel in the slit and wind the line around the cardboard with a slight bend in it to create a little tension. then hook the jig into the cardboard wherever....I have tied large swivels on my ice line so changing out a leader should be quick even in the cold. I hope they work good.
Remember...just cuz you arent paranoid...doesn't mean they're not out to get ya!!

Get a tippet wallet from a fly-fishing store.  That would work too

I've used the small tin containers that my little cigars come in - I have a mess of them, they are about 4" square, 1/4 thick. Coiled up 1 leader rig in each, and toss them in the bucket.
Sometimes it's not about the fish, but about the fishin'
