Cleats that won't chip paint
« on: Nov 08, 2011, 11:11 PM »
I have always worn the cheap rubber cleats that have two rows of spikes on them. They have always been just fine for me but my new atv has metal foot board and they scratch the paint right off. Do the chain models like yaktrax have the same effect? any others to consider?

As most cleats are steel and sharp to grip the ice, paint damage will occur.

Just one idea for a remedy is, cover the foot pegs with carpet scraps and keep it there with zip-ties.

Cover the footrest with rubber mats, the kind they use in bars to put glasses on to let them dry after they've been washed. Cut them to fit then zip tie to the floor board and you're set, the holes let the water drain through and they are very durable.

I may get flamed for this but.....
Am I the only one that doesn't see a problem?   It's an ATV, it is meant to be used, not stored in bubble wrap in pristine condition.   So what if the foot rests get scratched, there foot rests, that's what their there for.   If you are that concerned touch up the paint at the end of the season.

I still wear the old 1/2" steel cones in the shape of a square. You can always hit the foot pegs with a new coat of paint after ice fishing is done.

There are people who use their gear and people who clean their gear.............

The employment of effort, hard work, time, and energy put in locating fish will offend noone.

Hard to get suggestions once it goes off topic!  ;)

There are also people that use, abuse, and then clean there gear too! Do you just go out and get a new truck every time an oil change or car wash is needed! lol

I fish harder than most people I know around here. That doesn't mean I can't try to take care of my equipment. As a college student money doesn't grow on my trees and I am lucky to have what I have. I sure as heck am going to tr to keep it in the best shape I can!

Flame that! lol

#1 don't use carpet to cover your pegs. Carpet holds moister in and that helps introduce corrosion. If you are concerned by some bedliner stuff and paint it with that. The commercials show them beating the crap out of it with a hammer. Your foot pegs shouldn't beat it up to bad. Then you can use the crap out of your ATV and not worry about cosmetics. ;)

freshen 'em up at the end of the season with a little spray paint.  I have a hard time seeing ANY ice cleat not chipping paint.

I'm old school military.  Take care of your equipment and it will take care of you!  I have a new GMC truck, new Ranger boat, quad, sled and all of the stuff a guy could want.  Part of my enjoyment is maintaining my equipment after the mission.  I use it all hard but take care of it after.  Just an old Soldier's view.

i would get the ones with the chains, not so much for the foot pegs, but because at the days end the boots are heavey and you may skip a spike into the seat cushion climbing on

I like it...gotta think it would help with foot traction a little bit too

Great idea on the carpet or rubber mats... (thinkn rubber will be my ticket)  I use my stuff and my nice F150 that I take extremely good care of has plenty of "redneck pinstripes" on it from hunting.... but I do like to minimize the damage that I do to my "stuff", and thats why I have "nice stuff"..... my lady is picking up one of two ATV's today for me.... and I will definitely USE but take care of that as well! (rubber mat and zip tie's are on an offical "mental note to self"!!!  stay safe out 'ar..... V/R

Great idea with the bedliner. Why didn't I think of that?!?!?!

We have used bedliner on rocker panels on old plow trucks. Scrape the rust off, tape it off, and spray it on. Tough stuff
