First rainbow
« on: Jan 12, 2011, 09:22 PM »
On Sunday I went trout fishing for the first time in my life. Iced & released this 24 1/2 inch beauty rainbow in the first half hour, and a couple of 15+ inchers later on.

Awesome color, looks like you had fun.

It certainly had great color although the photo turned out a bit dark, and the catch was quite a thrill. Struck my 1/16 oz jig about 4 ft below the surface (in 14 FOW) and thrashed around vigorously, to put it mildly. It was somewhat of a challenge to get started up and out of the 8" hole, even with my son's help. It was just barely hooked on the very edge of the upper lip. A short while later I missed another big one that pulled just as hard. That one broke the line, perhaps on the edge of the hole as the drag was set fairly tight.

After that action I decided to set up my portable hub tent on the spot. Much later after no action my son noticed what appeared to be some movement on the bottom, via an old FL-8 flasher we were using. I dropped my lure down to the bottom and eventually hooked onto 'something' and had it part way up when it let go. I dropped back down and about 5 minutes later another bite. This time I got it up and out on the ice, a nice shiny rainbow just under 16 inches. About an hour later I pulled another the same size off the bottom. Interesting ... the big ones cruising just below the ice and the smaller (medium-size) rainbows just off the bottom.

Also interesting ... I had all the action, my son and my brother-in-law were skunked for the day!

Sometimes it's like that.  Try and figure what was different with your set up that made it productive.

This happened to me one summer.  It turned out I was using fireline, and my friends were using mono.
This may not sound like much, but we figured that my rig was trolling deeper than theirs. (everything else was the same)

We set their rigs deeper, and bam, everyone was getting bit.

Ended the day one shy of a limit.

Glad you had fun.

Thanks. Lots of related info available on the web ... just enter "ice fishing trout" into any search engine. Bound to be something close-by wherever you are in North America.

That is one heck of a first ice fishing trip.  Funny too that you had all the action.

Nice job.  Thanks for sharing.  That's a beauty and good job on C and R.  Thanks for all the details.  If that first trip doesn't get you hooked, I don't know what will.  I'm sure your son was thrilled to have you go out with him.  My Dad's fished with me alot and it really makes the day to have your Pop along to share all of the excitement.  Keep on making memories.

Nice trout there DD  @)
I remember you sending me a PM about tips for icefishing trout not too long ago.
My last trip to Tokaryk was a disaster if you saw my post. Well, I'm getting back on that horse..so to speak...and heading out there again this week for a 2 day trip. Hope to hit Patterson and Tokaryk and if time permits...try Pybus and Lake 400. I'm planning on leaving the snowmobile at home this time. Going to walk out this time ....equipped with rubber boots and snowshoes because I don't think the slush situation is any better since that Feb 8th disaster.
Your photo from January indicates that a snowmobile (nice ride BTW....unique snowflap  ;) ) was used....can I ask you which lake that was taken on? Just curious to know which lake did not have deep slush back in January.
Thanks
Blue Igloo

Thanks Blue, that was Jan. 8 on Patterson Lake. It was easy going then, but apparently heavy snowfall shortly after which I'm sure contributed to the slush formation that you experienced on Tokaryk. Good luck with your trip! :)
