Short  to match your description:

Early ice check the shallow weeds near pockets, depressions, and channels. As that bite slows, move to the weed edges near the deep water and continually check the basin area which is where you will  most likely end up by mid season.  In that type of lake , we sometimes find a weed bite all winter, but it is always in pockets of weed  near deeper water, and the bite location is strongly influenced by the time of day.

Contrary to what you may read, or hear present um with some meat when fishing shallow all season.

Acreage, other predators, forage, feeder creeks, springs, oxygen, cover other than weeds................. .......Often a Google Earth photo will show much more than any map may, irregularities, pockets, a sunken whatever. Just hope the photo wasn't taken during the winter

Also don't be afraid to drill a lot of holes and be wiiling to be mobile. You may have to hole hop to stay on the fish once you find the.  Good Luck!

Make swiss cheese outta  the ice and keep moving. Basin, weed edges , and weed. Try right inside/ outside the weedline right at dusk. Try to find a distinct structure, hump, point, step edge, inside corner, ect and work around it.
The good news is that if you are NOT getting one here and one there, they are schooled up and when ya find um it will be lock and load. Keep lking and learning the water body and keep us posted.
