crappie/oxygen=location?
« on: Mar 10, 2011, 09:02 AM »
fished a small pond very close to lees basin for the first time. the pond has a deep channel around the southern end of a island. tried to find suspended crappie and had no luck moved up out of the channel a bit and managed a nice one tight to the bottom. I have since heard and read that at this time of year they may head for the weeds because that is the most oxygen rich water available. can any of you enlighten me? the reasoning makes sense. dunno..........

   Don't give up on the deep channel until you have checked out most of it, very early, late and midday.  Oxygen is a serious consideration late January and February but heavy rain and warm weather will change that in March.  Fish in 10' depth will also suspend in top 10' in deep water.  Soon they will begin to think about spawning shallows but even than they will move back and forth from shallow to deep water.  Most weed beds are now flat on the bottom but crappie and blue gill will prowl the edges near drop offs.   I like to use tipups and tiny golden shiners (pin arks) to locate fish while I drill holes and look for fish with the flasher.
I hope I'm right because I just got a call from a friend in southern NH and he has been jigging up lots of crappie and big blue gill on small pimple tipped with worm.  They are in 10'-15' of water.   I'm going to bring my 41/2" hand auger and puts in lots of holes deep and shallow.  He says he catches 3 or 4 fish in a hole and than has to move to another hole.
First time ponds are a learning experience.  Don't give up covering more ice because of just one fish caught on weeds.  If your not marking numbers of fish on the flasher you need to continue searching.

Good Luck

Dick

Saunders, and Dick,

Today the crappie in my area were doing exactly what Dick had mentioned back and forth from the shallows to the deep and back.   The deep part the pond is about 24'  I found the 13-16' bottom on a steep rise to 8' with the shiners suspended at 10-12' kept me very busy this morning.  I also jigged a fair number about a foot off the bottom, they may have been following it down though hard to tell.  Tonight and tomorrow should be good.............Good Luck.

Thanks for the info!
I usually trout fish, so it's nice to learn about other species. I'm thinking about heading for a perch/crappie pond this weekend, so this info is very helpful. I'd love a fish fry!
Thank goodness for Shop n Save...otherwise I'd starve to death!  ;D
Thinkin 'bout cusk on the grill......
